Close of Lakshmi's baby\u003cbr/\u003eIn order to help reduce the numbers of young girls becoming mothers, a village in Kerala, southern India, is educating girls about the risks involved in teenage pregnancy. \u003cbr/\u003eInstances of teenage pregnancy are high among the inhabitants of Attappady in Kerala's Palakkad district.\u003cbr/\u003eLife here is far removed from mainstream Indian life and the nearest city is around three hours drive away.\u003cbr/\u003eCommunity health centres are too far away to be reached in emergencies and 80 percent of people in the area live in poverty.\u003cbr/\u003e15-year-old Lakshmi is an unmarried teenage mother who gave birth to a baby boy at home.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was in a relationship with a truck driver, who, after promising to marry her, deserted her once she conceived.\u003cbr/\u003eLakshmi, who lives with her grandmother, has no means of bringing up the baby. \u003cbr/\u003ePonni is another unwed mother, who has been suffering from hallucinations ever since she delivered her baby.\u003cbr/\u003eD. Sreedevi, is Chairperson of Kerala Women's Commission. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that young village girls are often mislead and taken advantage of by outsiders who come to Attappady on work.\u003cbr/\u003eThough the village administration tries to help such mothers through pension, it is often a small amount of money and not enough to make ends meet.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's is not just unmarried teenagers that add to the number of teen pregnancies.\u003cbr/\u003eChild marriage is another factor that is prevalent among the villages of Attappady.\u003cbr/\u003eSometimes, teenagers who meet at school decide to get married, other times families arrange marriages for their teenage children.\u003cbr/\u003eMarriages at an early age, when neither partners is mature enough to understand the need for family planning, often result in pregnancy.\u003cbr/\u003eMaruti got married at the age of 15 on the insistence of her family. A year later, she had a baby and has been unwell since then. \u003cbr/\u003eEarly marriages like hers also result in large number of children as the fertility span of a woman is quite large as compared to marriages that take place in adulthood.  \u003cbr/\u003eSuch pregnancies often run into complications since the girl's body is not fully ready for child bearing.\u003cbr/\u003eAdding to the problem is the distance between villages and hospitals which can be as much as ten kilometres (6.2 miles).\u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Saji, who works at the Community Health Centre in Agali, says that the root cause of teenage pregnancies is a lack of education awareness.\u003cbr/\u003eA recent survey carried out by the National Trust for Tribal Education and Research shows that even in villages with high literacy rates, there are at least 4-5 child marriages every year.\u003cbr/\u003eFaced with low socio-economic development and often unreachable health facilities, teenage pregnancies lead to high infant mortality and thed deaths of mothers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe infant mortality rate (IMR) in India is 70 per thousand live births and the mother mortality rate (MMR) is 407 per hundred thousand live births, according to government statistics.\u003cbr/\u003eBut NGOs like the National Trust for Tribal Education and Research and village-level social workers are trying to bring about a change through various programmes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe village representatives are also trying to help by setting up committees that take up cases of unmarried mothers to try getting them government aid.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations Population Fund says that globally girls aged 15 - 20 are twice as likely to die in childbirth as those in their twenties. \u003cbr/\u003eGirls under the age of 15 are five times as likely to die. \u003cbr/\u003eThe UNFPA say girls aged 15 -19 account for one in four unsafe abortions - an estimated 5 million each year. \u003cbr/\u003eComplications of pregnancy or childbearing represent the leading cause of mortality for girls aged 15-19 in developing countries according to the UNFPA.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
