Prince Charles says in the best of all worlds, all farms would be run like this one.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has been chosen to be the guest speaker at the Soil Association's fiftieth celebrations on Thursday night.\u003cbr/\u003ePatrick Holden is director of the Association and will introduce His Royal Highness.\u003cbr/\u003eHis group is the main advocate of organic farming in Britain and regulates farmers who practice the art.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Organic farming is a sustainable way forward in response to the breakdowns of an intensive farming which has relied on too many chemicals and an exploitation of nature for the last fifty years. We want to see a farming system which moves away from pesticides, away from artificial fertilisers, towards welfare-friendly, environmentally-friendly practices, and that's what organic farming is all about.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Patrick Holden, Director, Soil Association\u003cbr/\u003eBut organic farming is criticised for its expense. The yield drops by half and it takes three years for chemicals to leave the soil - that means higher prices in the shops.\u003cbr/\u003ePrince Charles was the natural choice as speaker for the organic farmers regulator says its director, who praised his pioneering spirit.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think the prince is passionate about the environment and he's not just a man who cares deeply about those issues but he wants to see a prolonged and lasting change in the way in which we look after our land and he used the farm here at Highgrove to put his principles into practise. He's aware that farmers like him are regarded as slightly odd by many in the mainstream.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Organic farming is perceived particularly by other farmers as being rather cranky when in fact it certainly isn't. It's a serious farming proposition and I spend my life showing farmers that it actually works, and once they've seen it for themselves they believe it.
