Being a sitting Judge, Justice Shamim Hasnain stated that he (Chowdhury) was with him at the Panjab University (during the liberation war),\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eHours after the verdict, Chowdhury's supporters set off fires in the city to protest the ruling.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Dhaka, at least two vehicles were burned and one person was injured, local television station, Channel 24, reported.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Chittagong district, where Chowdhury was elected to Parliament six times, authorities deployed paramilitary forces in anticipation of a backlash from opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party supporters.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the war, Salauddin Quader Chowdhury's father was an influential politician in the Muslim League party, which sought to prevent Bangladesh from breaking away from Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003eChowdhury's wife, Farhat Quader Chowdhury, said her husband would appeal.\u003cbr/\u003eA Bangladesh court sentenced 152 people to death on November 5th for a 2009 mutiny by disgruntled border guards who killed dozens of military commanders during a brutal, two-day uprising.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sentences followed a mass trial involving 846 defendants - a process criticised by a human rights group who said it was not credible and that at least 47 suspects died in custody.\u003cbr/\u003eDhaka's Metropolitan Sessions Court Judge Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman announced the verdicts in a packed courtroom in Dhaka on November 5th under tight security.\u003cbr/\u003eBesides the death sentences, 161 people were sentenced to life in prison; 256 people received prison terms between three and 10 years; and 277 people were acquitted.\u003cbr/\u003eThe border guards, known at the time of the mutiny as the Bangladesh Rifles or BDR, say they revolted over demands for salaries in line with their commanders' in the army; assignments on UN peacekeeping missions, which come with generous perks; and better facilities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mutiny broke out at the border guards' leafy Dhaka compound, an oasis inside the city complete with its own rose garden and a small zoo.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the time the insurrection ended, 74 people were dead, including 57 military commanders.\u003cbr/\u003eAmongst those convicted for taking part in the mutiny was Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Nasir Uddin Pintu, who was sentenced to life imprisonment.\u003cbr/\u003eHe waved defiantly to supporters as he exited the court.\u003cbr/\u003eThe case exposed deep tensions between the government and the military. \u003cbr/\u003eThe military was furious with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for negotiating with the mutineers instead of allowing the army to attack. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Bangladesh, a desperately poor South Asian nation with a history of catastrophe, army leaders have attempted to overthrow the government 21 times, twice successfully.\u003cbr/\u003eNew York-based Human Rights Watch has criticised the legal proceedings and called for a new trial. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group says at least 47 suspects have died in custody while the suspects have had limited access to lawyers.\u003cbr/\u003eBangladesh executed an opposition leader convicted of war crimes hours after the Supreme Court rejected a last-minute appeal on December 12th, officials said. \u003cbr/\u003eAbdul Quader Mollah was hanged at 10:01 pm local time (16:01 GMT) before his body was reportedly driven out of the jail in a convoy of ambulances.\u003cbr/\u003eMollah's Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, immediately called a nationwide general strike for Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore Mollah's execution, his family was seen leaving the hospital after their last visit with him.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking to media, his son Hasan Jamil said that he thought his father still had seven days until a final judgement would be reached.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He will decide in seven days about the mercy petition. He'll not give any decision now. He wants to meet with the lawyers,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Mollah was not given seven days, and shortly afterwards he became the first person executed after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formed a special tribunal in 2010 to try people suspected of crimes during the war.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 65 year-old was found guilty of crimes during the nation's war of independence against Pakistan in 1971. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government says Pakistani soldiers, aided by local collaborators, killed 3 (m) million people and raped 200 thousand women during the nine-month war.\u003cbr/\u003eMollah's party says the trials are an attempt to weaken the opposition and eliminate Islamic parties. Authorities have denied the allegation.\u003cbr/\u003eHis execution had been placed on hold on December 10th just before he originally was to have been put to death. The Supreme Court rejected his final appeal on December 12th.\u003cbr/\u003eJamaat-e-Islami, an ally of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, had warned of \"dire consequences\" if he was executed.\u003cbr/\u003eMollah was found guilty by the special tribunal in February of killing a student and a family of 11 and of aiding Pakistani troops in killing 369 other people during the independence war. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was sentenced to life in prison, but the Supreme Court changed that to a death sentence in September.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil it gained independence in 1971, Bangladesh was the eastern wing of Pakistan. Mollah's party campaigned against independence.\u003cbr/\u003eA Bangladeshi opposition leader and convicted war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah was buried by his relatives and neighbours in the early hours of December 13th, after he was hanged the previous evening.\u003cbr/\u003eAbdul Quader Mollah, 65, was hanged at 10:01 pm (16:01 GMT) on December 12th for war crimes committed during Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence against Pakistan. \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at the funeral, the local secretary of Mollah's Jamaat-e-Islami party, said they had asked the police to delay his burial so his family could attend but their request had been denied. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The administration replied saying it was under pressure from higher authorities and it (Mollah's body) couldn't be kept. All the arrangements were made by the administration,\" said Md Badruddin.\u003cbr/\u003eMollah's execution sparked violent protests on December 13th as activists torched homes and businesses belonging to government supporters, leaving at least three people dead, in a fresh wave of bloodshed ahead of elections next month.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Rangpur and Satkhira, Jamaat-e-Islami supporters marched through the streets in protest, lighting fires and felling trees to block main roads.\u003cbr/\u003eMollah was the first person to be hanged for war crimes in Bangladesh under an international tribunal established in 2010 to investigate atrocities stemming from the independence war.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tribunal remains politically volatile because most of those being tried are connected to the country's Islamist opposition. \u003cbr/\u003eThose who support the execution say that Mollah was hanged for serious crimes, and that the punishment had nothing to do with
