Burma where the London-based human rights group  said they will face torture, murder and other abuses at the hands of the army.\u003cbr/\u003eThailand has been heavily criticised by Western governments, human rights groups and  aid workers for forcing back as many as five thousand of the 15-thousand Karen  refugees who fled the most recent Burmese military offensive.\u003cbr/\u003eAmnesty International expressed \"grave concern\" that forced repatriations were  continuing, although no independent confirmation has yet been obtained.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plea coincided with demonstrations in the Thai capital Bangkok to commemorate a  slain Burmese democracy advocate in 1988.\u003cbr/\u003eBurmese students in Bangkok Thursday protested alleged atrocities committed by  Burma's army.\u003cbr/\u003eWith one in chains and another dressed as a Burmese soldier, the students re-enacted  what they said are continued and regular brutalities practiced by the Burmese army and  sanctioned by Burma's military government.\u003cbr/\u003eMarch the 13th marked the ninth anniversary of the slaying of Ko Phone Maw, a  Burmese student whose death sparked other protests in 1988. \u003cbr/\u003eBurma's military rulers provoked international condemnation after their violent  crackdown of pro-democracy activists in 1988 when hundreds were killed.\u003cbr/\u003eThursday's demonstration took place amidst controversy over Thailand's role in  repatriating Burmese refugees who say they face persecution if they are forced to return  to Burma.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Thai government said Wednesday that once fighting between Karen guerrillas and  the Burmese Army subsides it will force back all Karen refugees who have taken shelter  in Thailand.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Karen have been fighting for autonomy from the government in Rangoon since 1949,  but during the last decade they have been steadily losing their strongholds in the  mountains of eastern Burma.\u003cbr/\u003eThailand supported the Karen, and other ethnic insurgents, for decades as a buffer  against the Burmese - its foe for centuries.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the administration of Thai Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh now views the  rebels and the refugees as something of a hindrance to improving trade relations with  Burma's military government and has been pressuring the guerrillas to surrender.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for these Burmese students in Bangkok, it was a day to remember those who had  died in Burma fighting for their cause. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is one of the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or  ASEAN and Burma is seeking membership to solidify its acceptance in the region and  gain economic allies.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to Indonesia, ASEAN comprises Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the  Philippines and Vietnam.\u003cbr/\u003eBurma badly wants to join.\u003cbr/\u003eThese students contend, however, that support for Burma's bid to join ASEAN will  decrease pressure on Burma's leaders to improve human rights.\u003cbr/\u003eIn this regard, they said, Indonesia is the key.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:
