and wounding many.\u003cbr/\u003eFive blasts went off almost simultaneously near two major Shiite shrines, throwing bodies for metres (yards) in all directions and sending crowds of pilgrims into a panic in the city 80 kilometres (55 miles) south of Baghdad.\u003cbr/\u003eAn Associated Reporter saw 10 bodies that appeared to be dead being loaded onto a cart and taken away, as well as many injured.   \u003cbr/\u003eShiite Muslims gathered in the Iraqi city for the last day of the Ashoura festival that commemorates the death of the Shiite saint Imam Hussein, a grandson of the prophet Muhammad.\u003cbr/\u003eImam Hussein, killed in a power struggle in the 7th century, is buried in a gold-domed shrine in Karbala.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ceremony - the most important in the Shiite Muslim calendar - was banned by deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and Shiites have come out in full force this year to demonstrate their clout as they vie for political power in postwar Iraq after years of persecution.\u003cbr/\u003eAcross the city, colourful processions marched to beating drums and groups staged reenactments of the battle of Karbala in which Hussein died. \u003cbr/\u003eSome cut their heads and bled profusely while others beat their back with chains.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities fear extremists may attack during the celebrations to raise tensions between the country's Shiite majority and Sunni minority and security remained tight on Tuesday, with volunteers and armed men in civilian clothes patrolling the streets and searching pedestrians.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city has been off limits to most vehicles for over a week. \u003cbr/\u003ePolice and Polish soldiers set up checkpoints on roads leading up to Karbala, thoroughly searching cars and pedestrians and setting up a 20-kilometre (12-miles) cordon.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Shiites make up 60 percent of Iraq's 24 (M) million people and Shiite clerics have emerged as key centres of political powers, particularly Grand
