In fact we consider it to be unconscionable; it is going to cause a delay for our clients for another year, our Guantanamo clients - with other lawyers, we represent some 600. What the Supreme Court did today, they would not review a new piece of legislation that Congress put out. It's in the military commission act that takes away the right of habeas corpus for people at Guantanamo and that's the right to go into court and to say why am I being detained? And the Supreme Court said they won't review that decision but they want to relegate our clients; some 385 people left at Guantanamo, they want to relegate them to a process in which there is some kind of kangaroo court hearing at Guantanamo and some then kind of appeal to a court of appeals, which in our view is completely inadequate. Medium shot detainee walking behind fence\u003cbr/\u003eThe U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined for now to review whether Guantanamo Bay detainees may go to federal court to challenge their indefinite confinement.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral justices made clear they will be sympathetic to further requests from the detainees.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the roughly 385 prisoners have been held at the U.S. naval base in Cuba for more than five years - none has yet had a hearing in a civilian court challenging his detention, even though two earlier Supreme Court rulings extended legal protection to them.\u003cbr/\u003eA federal appeals court in Washington in February upheld a key provision of a law enacted last year that strips federal courts of their ability to hear such challenges.\u003cbr/\u003eAt issue is whether prisoners held at Guantanamo have a right to habeas corpus review, a basic tenet of the US Constitution that protects people from unlawful imprisonment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe detainees' core argument is that no matter where they are held by American authorities, they are entitled to access to U.S. courts. They want the court to strike down the new law as unconstitutional.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the White House, spokeswoman Dana Perino said the ruling had not been fully reviewed, but \"I think that, on first glance, we're very pleased with the decision.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut Michael Ratner, president of the Centre for Constitutional Rights, which has led the fight to gain court access for the detainees, expressed disappointed with the decision, which he described as \"unconscionable.\" \u003cbr/\u003eRatner said that in enacting the Detainee Treatment Act, Congress \"rips out the heart\" of court access \"and now the court says 'let's wait.' That's another year of delay.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe court is likely to be faced with the same cases it rejected on Monday once the appeals court begins conducting reviews.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a sign that the court has not had its final say on the matter, Justices Anthony Kennedy and John Paul Stevens made clear in a separate opinion that they were rejecting the appeals only on procedural grounds.\u003cbr/\u003eIt takes four votes among the nine justices to accept a case.\u003cbr/\u003eBipartisan proposals have been introduced in the Democratic-led Congress to rewrite the 2006 law that
