Wide of smoke and young pine plants in the background.
Christmas trees are regarded by many as an essential decoration during the festive period.
But there have been concerns expressed about whether the farming methods used are harmful to the environment.
In France, the biggest producing region is Morvan, a part of Burgundy.
Here, some producers claim to be trying to achieve truly ecological Christmas trees.
In cities across the world, huge Christmas trees loom over public places from London's Convent Garden to Capitol Hill in Washington.
Homeowners across the Christian world are also choosing trees to decorate their homes.
But where do the trees come from ?
In France it is possible that the tree in the corner of your room has come from the Burgundy region.
In the weeks before Christmas, this tree farm in the Parc du Morvan is busy preparing for last minute deliveries.
The freshly cut trees are wrapped in a net, their base is sharpened to fit more easily in a pot, then they are pressed together to save space.
A different colour tag states their height and species. Then they are ready for transport to shops, supermarkets and garden centres.
Frederic Naudet is a Christmas tree farmer and president of Natural Christmas Trees Association. He says that in this ecologically conscious age more and more consumers are demanding more environmentally friendly decorations, and producers are more concerned with non-toxic methods of production.
The region of Morvan produces 30 per cent of the Christmas trees sold in France, about six million.
Naudet and five other farmers in the area have opted to try to become more organic in their production.
The 'organic' famers are all individual landowners in the same area of Morvan.
The project is supported by the Natural park of Morvan.
Belgium and Danish trees are also popular with French consumers.
But this plantation hopes to soon acquire a competitive edge as they are working towards being declared 'organic', so they can carry an 'organic label' .
Most Christmas tree plantations use chemicals to control weeds at the base of the tree, but this is impossible if you are to call the trees 'organic'
So the team found a new solution, a breed of sheep (Shropshire) who eat the weeds but not the trees, and a horse who has similar dietary tastes as the sheep.
It is less productive to grow trees organically, with a crop yield of about 6-7 thousand pines for a hectare of land instead of 10 thousand.
However, since the experiment started here in 2003, five other land owners have adopted the new technique importing 60 sheep.
The growing time is from 5 to ten years, depending of the height required of the tree.
They hope that by the time the 'organic' trees are ready to be harvested, the consumer demand for eco-friendly Christmas trees will have increased and people will be prepared to pay up to twenty percent more for an organic tree.
Patrick Grosche is an organic Christmas tree farmer.
He says the main reason why he switched to organic methods was that there is a trout filled river at the end of his land, which may get polluted by pesticides if he used them.
Burgundy is renowned for its trout fishing rivers and the pine plantation is located right in the hearth of the natural park (protected area).
Grosche explains that the sheep simply don't like the taste of the trees, and that is why they are happy to graze on the vegetation but not the precious pines.
The Shropshire breed was selected after attempts with three other French breeds had failed, as the animals ate both the grass, weeds and young trees indiscriminately.
Now the sheep have been sent indoors for the winter, but a lone horse, Cartouche, is still doing the job.
Grosche says the plantation's horse, Cartouche, is included in the scheme because he befriended a ram in the flock.
One of the reasons natural trees are considered more ecological than their plastic cousins is that through the process of photosynthesis the plants take carbon dioxide (which is a greenhouse gas) out of the atmosphere, and with the help of sunlight and water, create energy for the tree to grow and expel oxygen as a by-product.
Photosynthesis is why trees are often called 'the lungs of the earth' .
Unlike plastic trees, when the pine trees are disposed of after Christmas they are biodegradable, whereas plastic trees remain in landfill sites, adding to the huge amount of rubbish produced in the western world each year.
Nobody knows yet which agency can award the 'organic' label.
There are six independent certification agencies in France, but no centralised agency.
The farmers have contacted the relevant agencies, then for three years they have to work according to the organic farming rules in order to qualify for the organic certification.
Not every tree is suitable to adorn a home.
The badly shaped trees are weeded out early and burnt on the spot, to make room for next spring's new plantation of Christmas trees.
Currently the most popular type of tree in France is the Nordmann Fir .
In 2003 sales of Nordmann trees here overtook Epicea pines.
Since 2004 since the sales of the Nordmann Firs have increased in sales by about ten percent each year.
Even if their cost is about double.
Naudet says the key to the Nordmann's popularity is that they don't shed their needles.
The not- so- perfectly- shaped trees go up in smoke, while new plants are already growing and will be ready to be harvested as fully 'organic' trees by Christmas 2010.
The team here just hope by then there will be a demand for eco-friendly Christmas trees.

<div class='action-container flex
