On the other hand, recent articles suggest embryo stem-cell research is deadly, not just for the donor embryo, but for the patient.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. Bush, to approve federal funding of controversial embryonic stem-cell research.\u003cbr/\u003eOrin Hatch, and several other conservative, pro-life lawmakers spoke to the media on Tuesday just before attending a congressional subcommittee hearing about stem-cell research.\u003cbr/\u003eHatch affirmed that the present debate is not over abortion rights, but rather what should be done with left-over foetuses from invitro-fertilisation procedures. \u003cbr/\u003eHatch and other lawmakers like Gordon Smith, a Republican Congressman from Oregon, say that federal funding is the only way to ensure that research carried out on the embryos is done in an ethical manner. \u003cbr/\u003eIf the National Institute of Health is allowed to use part of its budget for stem-cell research, then that research will have to adhere to NIH ethical guidelines.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the news conference took place, research continued all over the country with stem-cells from both adults and embryos.\u003cbr/\u003eStem-cell research is legal in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eOpponents to embryonic stem-cell research argue that the cells yielded from adult donors are just as useful as embryonic samples, but do not require the destruction of an embryo.\u003cbr/\u003eBut advocates say patients that have been treated experimentally with adult stem-cells show a greater likelihood of suffering from tissue rejection complications.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to the subcommittee members, several witnesses were present in the hearing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe committee also heard testimony from those who do not want human embryos to be used in medical research.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo of the witnesses were women who had given birth to children thanks to IVF.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mothers spoke about the importance of preserving left-over embryos and said that there is no surplus of them to donate to science.\u003cbr/\u003eThe father of two \"embryonic-twins\" stood up, with his children in his arms, and asked the panel which of his children they would have taken in the name of research.\u003cbr/\u003eStem-cell research is one of the most promising leads in the search for a cure of
