powers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe nation's economic meltdown is a major concern for voters.\u003cbr/\u003eArmenia is struggling under soaring inflation and paralyzed production.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter a slow start, the turnout was high in Armenia's first elections since those for President in 1991. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country's first post-Soviet parliament will have 190 members, 150 from constituencies and a further 40 representing the various political parties. \u003cbr/\u003eVoters were also asked to cast their ballot on a new Constitution which would give the President the power to accelerate economic reform in the republic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan swept to power four years ago and has been praised in international circles for stabilising the economy under difficult circumstances. \u003cbr/\u003eOver the last year he has shown increasing impatience with opposition parties who have criticised his leadership style. \u003cbr/\u003eIn December one of the main opposition parties was closed down and its newspapers banned, and eight opposition parties have been barred from taking part in these elections due to procedural irregularities.\u003cbr/\u003eOpposition parties claim that fast economic reforms are merely impoverishing the people and they strongly object to Ter-Petosyan being given any further power.\u003cbr/\u003eParties have been holding regular demonstrations in the capital Yerevan over the past month, one of which was broken up by the riot police. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government's actions
