Working on it allowed me to take a fresh look on the night."
Among 350 species on display, only one is part of a now extinct species: the thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian wolf.
"Nocturnal fauna is currently disappearing, the thylacine, the Tasmanian wolf, already disappeared but there are other animals, like this owl you can see behind me, that are critically endangered," says Grisolia.
One of the best ways to understand the nocturnal fauna is to be immersed in the conditions in which they live, Grisolia says.
"It was very important for us to recreate this darkness, a mysterious and magical atmosphere, not literally terrifying but disturbing and also very poetical if you think of the sky at night. We offer a real setting, the exhibition is very 'immersive', there is a lot of staging, and there are sound effects."
Scattered at different points of the exhibition, four units allow visitors to get acquainted with the five senses of night time animals.
The last unit presents the various sixth senses that animals have.
These perceptive abilities are found, for instance, in snakes which can see in infrared at night and in bats which use echolocation which allows them to orient themselves by the echo of the sounds they emit.
One of the goals of the exhibition, which took three years to create, is to raise awareness of the hazards of light pollution.
Human-produced light pollution affects astronomy as strong city lighting makes it difficult to observe stars.
Light pollution also adversely affects wildlife, according to Didier-Julien Laferriere, who has co-curated the exhibition.
"A lot of nocturnal animals orient themselves thanks to the stars, their position in the sky, it's a topic we started to explore recently. If there is light pollution, they (the animals) can't see the stars and don't have landmarks."
Laferriere gives the example of migratory birds that stray from their paths and die of exhaustion, and turtle hatchlings who cannot find their way to the sea.
"When the sea turtle hatchlings hatch out they have to reach the sea. They orient themselves thanks to the feeble reflection of the sky on the sea surface. If there is a strong artificial light that comes from the coast, on their backs, (the hatchlings) will be disoriented and will go in the direction of those artificial lights and will finally get lost in the sand and die from dehydration or will be eaten by the stray dogs in the morning."
Light pollution can also disrupt the human circadian rhythm, the body's internal clock, which can affect sleep which in turn can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, depression, memory impairment and a weakened immune system.
Some very rare and valuable exhibits, such as a sample of the a rock from the Moon are on display as well, thrilling young visitors.
The sample at the museum weighs 109 grams (3.8 ounces) and was a part of a rock that US astronaut James Irwin collected during the Apollo 15 mission, that originally weighed two kilos (4.4 pounds).
Curators say new technologies, interactive games, sound and visual effects are used to engage younger visitors.
"Night" runs from February 12 to November 3, 2014.
Paris - 10 February 2014
1.
