Various of play, audience applauding
It was one woman's dream and now it's an actor's paradise - an outside theatre perched high on one of the UK's most dramatic coastlines.
Built nearly 80 years ago the Minack Theatre in Cornnwall is drawing in sell out crowds this year.
'Treasure Island' - adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel about pirates and buried gold.
Few actors will have taken to the stage against such a realistic backdrop of crashing waves and seagulls.
This is the Minack Theatre, carved into Cornwall's rocky coastline close to Lands End, on the south-westerly tip of the UK.
For many, it's one of the most stirring places in the world to enjoy watching - or staging - a play.
Director of 'Treasure Island' from the Janus Theatre Co, Jane Levan, says the Minack theatre is unique.
The word 'Minack' comes from the now seldom-heard Cornish language, and it means 'rocky place'.
For the last 78 years this spot has been dominated by the Minack Theatre, which began as a vision of local theatre enthusiast, Rowena Cade.
Born to a wealthy Derbyshire family, Rowena Cade did not settle in Cornwall until the years following World War I.
Eventually, along with her mother, she bought the Minack headland and had a house built overlooking the bay.
Manager of the theatre, Phil Jackson, explains "Rowena Cade bought this headland in 1923 and she was involved with local theatre, in making and designing, and they did an open air production of 'Midsummer Night's Dream' in a local wood. That was so successful she decided to put on 'The Tempest', and the ideal place was a cliff. And so in 1931 and '32 they built the first stage here for 'The Tempest'."
That production of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' in 1932 would provide the template for what was to come.
It took six months for Rowena Cade, along with two local craftsmen, to construct a stage and basic seating, and the performance was lit using a combination of car headlights, batteries, and power from their house atop the cliff.
But the effect of the finished production was acclaimed by all present, and even inspired an article in The Times newspaper.
The Minack Theatre became a lifetime's work for Rowena Cade, and she is said to have worked in all weathers to improve the space, up until her mid-eighties.
Even when she passed away in 1983, aged 90, she was still planning improvements, leaving behind sketches outlining how the theatre might be covered to allow performances to take place in the all-too-frequent Cornish rain.
Those plans, as yet, have not been implemented.
But Jane Levan feels nothing needs to be done to improve the theatre.
The Minack Theatre was built primarily to stage the works of William Shakespeare, and his work still provides the backbone of each season's program.
But since its construction, virtually every kind of entertainment has been seen at the Minack, including musicals, ballet, opera and, more recently, stand-up comedy and rock and roll.
Unsurprisingly 'The Pirates of Penzance', a comic musical by Gilbert and Sullivan, is a regular favourite. But there is a new production each week, and many locals buy a season ticket and visit regularly during the summer months.
Most productions are sold out long in advance, but, despite already having tickets, seasoned visitors will often queue for more than an hour in order to get the best seats.
Phil Jackson says the theatre has not always been so popular.
Theatre companies play at the Minack by invitation only, and good amateur groups are encouraged to bring their work here, as well as professional ones.
During the school holidays the theatre takes into account the influx of holidaymakers and families into the region.
But the theatre inspires such affection amongst locals that for some, it almost doesn't matter what the play is.
Front of house manager at the Minack, Phil Mayo, says the theatre's location is a huge attraction.
This audience has come to see an adaptation of 'Treasure Island' by regular visitors Janus Theatre Co, an amateur group from Bristol which was formed with the sole intent of staging works at the Minack.
The play, with its seafaring theme and appeal to children, is thought by many to be an ideal choice.
And the audience, locals and holidaymakers alike, say they are looking forward to the evening's entertainment.
The venue can be a challenging one for actors - the sound of the wind and the sea means that they need to be amplified to enable audience members at the back to hear them.
It's also been known for dolphins to distract from the onstage action, by providing their own entertainment in the sea beyond.
Despite those factors, its clearly a place where actors want to perform again and again, as Michael Clark explains.
The Minack Theatre was run by Rowena Cade, and subsidised with her own money until 1976 when, well into her eighties, she donated it to a specially set up charitable trust.
The trustees went on to run the operation on more commercial lines, building a visitors' centre, extending the season of plays and enlarging the retail operation.
Now, with performances geared towards incoming holidaymakers, the Minack sells out to 750 people virtually every night during the high season and is well able to pay its own way.
Trustees of the Minack Theatre now have the simple overriding objective to preserve the magic of Rowena Cade's vision.
In order to do this effectively they ensure that it continues to be a high-tech modern theatre, putting on a variety of productions and attracting large audiences.
Besides maintaining high standards of performance they also strive to book new theatre companies and to keep ticket prices low, yet still generate sufficient income to maintain and improve the theatre.
It's something of a balancing act, but on the basis of this performance, and the enthusiasm of theatre companies, staff and audience alike, Rowena Cade's vision will continue to flourish.
wacky

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more
