tradition.
A yearly festival celebrating Mexico's love affair with the pinata is held in Alcoman, close to Mexico City.
The Feria de La Piata, or fair of the pinata, goes beyond the hanging toys.
The fair is an opportunity for festival goers to catch a glimpse of how traditional pinatas are made.
Today most pinatas are mass produced in factories instead of being hand made.
However a revival for traditionally made pinatas, made with clay and filled with fruit, is sweeping the country.
The traditional Christmas pinata has a round centre with seven points symbolising the seven cardinal sins, which players defeat with the breaking of the ball.
Players have to wear a blindfold while attempting to smash the pinata and release the treats inside.
Recently pinata makers have started using paper-mache to stop people getting hurt by falling clay fragments. communications for the town of Acolman.
She says the tradition dates back to the 16th century, when monks trying to gain the loyalty of the native people brought the game to Acolman.
The monks soon found out it a good way to attract local people to Christianity, says Negrete.
Decorated meticulously with bright paper, they seem too big to take home and a shame to break just to get at the goodies inside.
With so much detail, it's hard for craftspeople to compete with the manufactured alternatives shipped in from nearby Mexico City.
Large piatas at the fair sell for only about $10 US Dollars.
Negrete says the seven points of the pinata symbolise the devil, while the blindfold signifies blind faith, and the stick used shows the hope players must have.
Despite fierce competition Acolman's artisans are determined to keep the tradition alive.
Romana
