Convoy driving past\u003cbr/\u003eFrench Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner met on Friday with Joseph Kabila, President of Democratic Republic of the Congo, at Kabila's office in the capital, Kinshasa.\u003cbr/\u003eThe meeting took place in Citďż˝ de l'OUA, a compound that houses some government buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eKouchner's visit, which was scheduled to last two days, came shortly after warlords and militia fighters signed a long-awaited peace accord with the government of the Central African country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe deal signed late on Wednesday commits all sides to an immediate cease-fire in Congo's east, followed by the pulling back of fighters from key areas that will then become a UN-patrolled buffer zone, said Vital Kamerhe, a government spokesman for the talks.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This commitment from all has brought peace,\" Kouchner said to journalists.\u003cbr/\u003eFive years after the end of back-to-back wars that destroyed much of Congo, sporadic violence has continued to plague the eastern border region. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal militias regularly clash with each other, with army forces and with perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide who fled over the shared border to eastern Congo's little-policed hills.\u003cbr/\u003eA representative for Laurent Nkunda, the main insurgent leader, was the first to sign the document in a ceremony attended by Kabila. \u003cbr/\u003eDelegates for other armed groups followed, including members of militias known as Mai Mai who had argued for last-minute changes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe peace deal gives militia fighters amnesty from prosecution for insurgency or acts of war, but not for war crimes or crimes against humanity, Kamerhe said.\u003cbr/\u003eRepresentatives for the government and warlords were meeting in Goma, in eastern Congo, to negotiate the peace deal.\u003cbr/\u003eKouchner said he was travelling to Goma on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are heading to Goma tomorrow and we will see in practice what to do.
