Wide of tents and damaged ground\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) has set up a tents for villagers in the northern Gaza strip who were forced from their homes after the area flooded with sewage.\u003cbr/\u003eThe septic pool collapsed early on Tuesday causing a wave of stinking waste and mud to inundate the Gaza village of Umm Naser, killing five people, including two babies.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Ging, the head of UNRWA in Gaza, said \"This has been a tragedy that was predicted and documented. The UN published a report in 2004 predicting that unless action were taken, that exactly what happened yesterday would happen.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe 2004 United Nations report warned that the sewage facility, built to service a population of 50,000, was handling waste from 190,000 people, and flooding was inevitable. \u003cbr/\u003eGing warned of further deadly sewage floods.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The real threat now from another facility up there, which is equally overloaded, except that this time it's one and a half million cubic meters of waste water and sewage that could spill out into the area and cause an even bigger disaster,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe collapse highlighted the desperate need to upgrade Gaza's overloaded, outdated infrastructure. \u003cbr/\u003eAid officials said construction of a modern sewage treatment plant has been held up by constant Israeli-Palestinian fighting.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, construction of a new plant did not appear to have been affected by year-old international sanctions on the Palestinian Authority. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Gaza City mayor blamed the collapse on local people digging dirt from an earthen embankment around the structure and selling it to building contractors.\u003cbr/\u003eThe existing plant in northern Gaza - located just a few hundred metres (yards) from the frontier with Israel - stored incoming waste in seven holding basins. \u003cbr/\u003eWith the burgeoning population producing nearly four times as much waste as the plant could treat, local officials were forced to store the overflow in the nearby dunes, creating a lake of sewage covering nearly 110 acres (45 hectares), according to the United Nations.\u003cbr/\u003eAn embankment around one of the seven holding basins collapsed, sending a wall of sewage crashing into the neighbouring village of Umm Naser.\u003cbr/\u003eThe wave killed two women in their 70s, two toddlers and a teenage girl and injured 35 others, hospital officials said. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 200 homes were destroyed, health officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eRescue crews and gunmen from the militant Hamas group rushed to search for people feared buried under the sewage and mud, most residents fled or were evacuated.\u003cbr/\u003eThe collapse will force officials to divert the waste into the other six basins, putting those in danger as well.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother collapse could send sewage flooding into Beit Lahiya, a far larger town nearby, local officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eIt warned that the lake created by the overflow from the seven basins posed a
