Various of Kenya Army soldiers (part of AMISOM = African Union Mission in Somalia) celebrating outside Kismayo university compound \u003cbr/\u003eAllied African troops were on Tuesday taking significant ground in Kismayo, Somalia, the last major stronghold of Islamist rebels who have been fighting the country's internationally backed government. \u003cbr/\u003eKenya Defence Forces and Somali National Army personnel, members of AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia), were now patrolling the streets of Kismayo, said Kenyan military spokeman Colonel Cyrus Oguna, in an interview at the Kismayo airport. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said that the troops had secured Kismayo's central police station and the new airport.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think, being fully in charge of Kismayo we cannot put a time frame to it because, a couple of days ago we were not where we are today.... Our success is measured by the areas that we are in control of, and we are in control of a lot of areas by now and that is good progress,\" said Colonel Oguna.\u003cbr/\u003eKenyan troops invaded the southern Somali city of Kismayo early on Friday, and the militant Islamist group al-Shabab, which is allied to al-Qaida, announced soon after that their forces were leaving the lucrative port town.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter years of bloody street-by-street warfare, African Union troops from Uganda and Burundi pushed al-Shabab out of Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, in August 2011. \u003cbr/\u003eThe AU troops have since taken over towns outside Mogadishu as well. Kenyan forces invaded Somalia late last year, and have been moving slowly towards Kismayo.\u003cbr/\u003eThe once-powerful al-Shabab spent years defending its Mogadishu territory, but since being forced out it has chosen to retreat from towns when challenged by African Union forces or Ethiopian troops who moved into western Somalia earlier this year.\u003cbr/\u003eAllied African troops sent by the African Union are helping Somalia's fragile government to restore order to the failed state that has been in chaos since warlords overthrew a longtime dictator in 1991.\u003cbr/\u003eAnalysts expect that now that al-Shabab has been forced from all of Somalia's major cities, the group will resort to guerrilla tactics such as suicide attacks and roadside bombs. \u003cbr/\u003eAl-Shabab claimed through Twitter on Tuesday that it had set off huge explosions targeting allied troops and killed scores attempting to enter a regional administration building.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Kenyan forces disputed al-Shabab's claim. Bomb experts had simply detonated improvised explosive devices planted at the new airport, said a Kenyan army a spokesman.\u003cbr/\u003eClaims about fighting in Somalia are difficult to verify.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Kenyan military also said the Somali National Army arrested an al-Shabab militant who wanted to detonate a bomb targeting the troops.
