Democratic Republic of Congo.\u003cbr/\u003ePresent-day DRCongo became independent from Belgium 50 years ago and the protest leaders organised the rally to coincide with the anniversary.\u003cbr/\u003eThe demonstrators called for a boycott of the anniversary celebrations, saying that the people of the Central African nation had little to celebrate.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the protesters said Kabila and his government had \"forgotten that we must support the orphans and stop the raping of women\".\u003cbr/\u003eBrutal armed rebellions in the east of the DRCongo have forced a quarter (M) million people from their homes and at least 83-hundred rapes were committed last year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country was created in 1885 by Belgium's King Leopold II, who recruited the British-born American explorer Henry Morton Stanley to make a secret expedition to carve out a state in the heart of Africa - one that was nearly 80 times the size of Belgium.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Congo Free State was unique among colonies in that it was the private property of the Belgian king. \u003cbr/\u003eBut his memory is forever stained by the depredations committed by companies that made him a millionaire by tapping into the nation's natural resource: ivory, then latex from wild rubber trees that was much in demand after the creation of the pneumatic tyre.\u003cbr/\u003ePictures of mutilated Congolese became a mark of Leopold's reign, with the companies ensuring their militias enforced discipline without\u003cbr/\u003ewasting ammunition by chopping off hands.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's not known how many millions were slaughtered and maimed, but historians put the number of dead at between four and eight (M) million. \u003cbr/\u003eThe resulting scandal forced Leopold to surrender the country in 1908 to the Belgian government, which called it the Belgian Congo.\u003cbr/\u003eEven now, 50 years after the Democratic Republic of Congo became independent, many Congolese blame Belgium for the state of their country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe colonisers continued to meddle after independence and were blamed, along with the CIA, for the 1961 assassination of the country's first democratically elected prime minister, Patrice Lumumba, who had planned to kick out the Europeans and their exploitative mining companies.\u003cbr/\u003eLumumba's killing ended democracy in the African nation for nearly a half century. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth Belgium and the United States supported a 32-year dictatorship set up by Mobutu Sese Seko, a pro-Western leader seen as a bulwark against communism.\u003cbr/\u003eMobutu managed to control the country he renamed Zaire, but amassed a personal fortune estimated at five (B) billion US dollars while entrenching corruption that continues to plague the country to this day.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1997, an alliance of rebels invaded and overthrew Mobutu. \u003cbr/\u003eLaurent Kabila, the father of the current president, took power.\u003cbr/\u003eThen, neighbouring Rwanda's genocide spilled over the borders and a regional battle began over control of the DRCongo's vast resources. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the 1990s, country after country plunged into the war - Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Angola all sent troops to support Kabila in return for mining concessions.\u003cbr/\u003eFour (M) million people died, mainly from strife-driven hunger and disease, and left the country in such disarray that, even now, the International Rescue Committee estimates some 45-thousand people die each month, mainly from hunger and diseases like AIDS and malaria.\u003cbr/\u003eKabila was later assassinated and replaced by his son Joseph, who is still in power after winning a landmark election held in 2006\u003cbr/\u003eIn the DRCongo's capital, Kinshasa, Kabila used Wednesday's independence celebrations to buff up his country's troubled image.\u003cbr/\u003eHe and his government are awaiting confirmation within days of an IMF-backed plan to cancel up to eight (b) billion dollars of debt, while UN peacekeepers started this month to wind down their presence after pressure from Kabila, who
