Close up of the elephant's trunk, zoom out elephant spraying water on people\u003cbr/\u003ePeople all over Thailand celebrated the Buddhist New Year Songkran festival by splashing around in water. \u003cbr/\u003eTraditionally, families and friends celebrate New Year by sprinkling water on Buddha images in prayer and by pouring water on each other's hands for good luck. \u003cbr/\u003eBut many Thai children, delighted at the prospect of being able to splash water on their friends, use the tradition as an excuse for a good water fight. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd it doesn't always stop with the children. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the Dusit Zoo in Bangkok there are a lot of  big kids throwing water around.\u003cbr/\u003eChildren jump around in pools, spraying each other, or whoever passes by, with buckets of water and sprays from water pistols.\u003cbr/\u003eAdults get into the act too, enjoying the chance to temporarily revert to childhood and squirt their friends.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd then there's the elephants - they win trunks down every time. \u003cbr/\u003eThe elephant is the national symbol of Thailand. There are between 3000 and 4000 in the country. About half are domesticated - working with, or performing for, humans. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the Dunsit zoo this week they've been spraying water, eating ice cream, dancing and getting lots of cuddles.\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere in the zoo, Dulcit's three tigers are snoozing in the shade and cooling themselves off under a water sprinkler. \u003cbr/\u003eLike the tigers, most animals at this zoo are native to Thailand and used to the heat in the summer months.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Songkran festival celebrations bring a welcome relief for the animals, when temperatures are usually in the mid-thirties to low forties.\u003cbr/\u003eStaff at the zoo do their best to ensure the animals are as comfortable as possible during this period.\u003cbr/\u003eSprinkler systems are in place at most enclosures. \u003cbr/\u003eSpecial frozen treats are also prepared at mealtimes using meat for the carnivores and fruit for the herbivores. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Dusit Zoo was opened in 1938.\u003cbr/\u003eBuilt around a large lake covering 47 acres, it's home to more than 800 species of birds, 300 mammals and more than 200 reptiles.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to lead veterinarian Somchai Chodapisitkul the most popular animal at the zoo is Mali, one of three hippopotamuses that reside here.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile many Thais working in Bangkok go home to the province over the five-day Songkran holiday, others take advantage of the break to visit relatives in the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eTen year old Mana Kidtaku, visiting  from Petchaboon Province, says he wants see how animals live at the zoo. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Songkran festival is the busiest time of the year for Dunsit Zoo.  \u003cbr/\u003eThere's little rest for the staff.  Many miss most of the New Year festivities that are occuring away from the zoo, but at least  they get a chance to cool off. \u003cbr/\u003eKeyword animals
