Film clip - 'The Man Who Wasn't There'\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest film from the COEN BROTHERS is released this week, 'THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE'.\u003cbr/\u003eThe film was first unveiled at the Cannes film festival in May, and will hit UK screens on Friday.  US fans will get their chance to see the movie from 31st October.\u003cbr/\u003eBILLY BOB THORNTON and FRANCES McDORMAND star in the dark tale of infidelity and murder, crime and punishment.\u003cbr/\u003eSet in a small northern California town of the late 40s, the film follows Ed Crane (Thornton), a barber unhappy with his life.  When he finds out his wife Doris (McDormand) has been unfaithful with her boss, Ed thinks a little blackmail will change things for the better.  However, Ed's scheme unravels and lays bare even darker secrets.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Minnesota-born Coen Brothers work like a well-oiled machine: they share writing credits, Ethan is billed as producer and Joel as director, but on set, the roles blend.  While for most this would mean confusion, the siblings share the same vision, and those who have worked with them insist it's a winning formula.\u003cbr/\u003eFrances McDormand plays Doris -  a role written with her in mind.  The Academy Award-winning star of 'Fargo' also played the lead in another previous Coen Brothers' film 'Blood Simple', and knows how the brothers work - in fact, being married to Joel made things even easier.  The acclaimed actress has commented that she would have been on set anyway, so she may as well be working.\u003cbr/\u003eInevitably, she has a different way of working with each brother.  \"I feel like I have a more intuitive relationship with Joel.  I can tell by the way that he sighs whether or not he is liking what I am doing, and with Ethan it is a lot more specific.  I can get very specific technical direction from him that I think I hear differently because I don't have as intimate relationship with him.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnother long-time filming relationship continues with Roger Deakings, the Coen's favoured Director of Photography.\u003cbr/\u003e'The Man Who Wasn't There' is a black and white film - shot on colour, but printed in black and white.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile some film fans may be turned off by the lack of colour, the Coens insist it was the right way to go: \"Well it was just dictated by the kind of story it is. They chose him for his 'soulful' quality, and what they saw as his ability to change radically from role to role.  The actor accepted the part before he'd even read the script, saying he knew it would be good.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also supports the decision to present the film in black and white: \"Black and white movies I think tend to bring you in more.  I think you watch and listen a lot more carefully with a black and white.  It is just a more intense mood.  I hope more people will start watching black and white movies.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe film's atmosphere is inspired by a favourite writer of the brothers' - pulp fiction writer James Cain.  Like Cain, they set their tale in the forties, and used an everyday man with a dreary day-to-day life as their main protagonist.  \u003cbr/\u003eCain's most famous novels have inspired other classics -  Billy Wilder's \"Double Indemnity\" (1944),  Michael Curtiz' \"Mildred Pierce\" (1945), and Tay Garnett's \"The Postman Always Rings Twice\" (1946).       \u003cbr/\u003eBut the true inspiration for 'The Man Who Wasn't There'  actually came about during filming on one of the Coen's earlier films, 'The Hudsucker Proxy'.\u003cbr/\u003eThe brothers explain that they were shooting a scene in a barbershop, which had a poster on the wall showing all the different 1940s style haircuts.  They were looking at it all the time, and gradually started to think about the man who had cut the styles, and a story began to take shape.\u003cbr/\u003eThe brothers felt that many crime stories revolve around small, mean people doing nasty things to each other and nobody walking away happy.  They wanted 'The Man Who Wasn't There' to be about ordinary middle-American people who get into a situation that spirals out of control - making the crime element inadvertent. Their hero more or less stumbles into it.\u003cbr/\u003eJAMES GANDOLFINI (The Sopranos) also features, as Doris' boss and lover, Big Dave Brewster.\u003cbr/\u003eBilly Bob Thornton's previous roles include 'A Simple Plan', 'Armageddon' and 'Primary Colors'.
