leaders at the World Economic Forum meet in the Chinese city of Dalian to discuss ways to profit from green technologies, a report published Thursday highlighted ways new energy-efficient industries could develop in China. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report by the China Greentech Initiative, a group of more than 80 leading technology companies, non-governmental organisations and policy advisers, said China potentially could be a 500 (b) billion to 1 (tr)  trillion a year market for environmentally sustainable green technologies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group pinpointed opportunities from 300 potential green technology options for China, spanning energy, water, buildings, transportation and\u003cbr/\u003eindustry.\u003cbr/\u003eBut government support is key, said Richard Gledhill, global leader of Climate Change \u0026amp; Carbon Market Services in London for PricewaterhouseCoopers, a consultancy that helped head the research.\u003cbr/\u003e\"China is very well positioned to become a leading player in green technology,\" Gledhill said, speaking from Dalian.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And China has the potential to steal a march on its other global competitors, leading to an early transition to a lower carbon economy and a more sustainable long term growth,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2007, China overtook the United States as the world's largest producer of carbon dioxide.\u003cbr/\u003eBut China now has a \"very aggressive and very ambitious energy and climate change policy\" said Yvo de Boer, the top United Nations official overseeing the climate change negotiations in various parts of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eLiang Bing, site manager for Guohua Wind Power Company said China's alternative energy market is booming. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company has provided the technology for thousands of wind turbines across rural China. \u003cbr/\u003eChina is also investing in other 'clean' technologies, as illustrated by a chicken farm in Beijing that produces electricity from the farm yard waste products.\u003cbr/\u003eEgg producer, Deqingyuan Chicken Farm makes biogas from chicken manure. \u003cbr/\u003eInternational companies are helping China move forward towards environmentally friendly technologies said Jack Wen, of GE Energy, China.\u003cbr/\u003e\"China relatively is starting the wind business later than Europe and US, so there's a lot of learning curve going on, so I think GE and other international companies bring a good bridge to help that happen.\" \u003cbr/\u003eChina's rapid growth and dizzyingly fast urbanisation are contributing to a building boom that has created more than twice the floor space as in the US.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 18 million people migrate from rural areas to the cities each year, so that by about 2050 China will have more than 200 cities with populations\u003cbr/\u003eof more than 1 million people, the China Greentech report said.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch growth will require huge increases in use of energy, water and materials that will force China to adopt new, environmentally friendly\u003cbr/\u003etechnologies, it said.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth Chinese and foreign companies will find new opportunities, though they still face challenges, particularly in overcoming barriers to transfer\u003cbr/\u003eof technologies and preventing piracy of intellectual property such as patents.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch issues were a focus of a conference on green technology this week in Shanghai, sponsored by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and other groups and companies
