Close up of green jatropha seeds\u003cbr/\u003eZimbabwe has launched a bio-diesel project in the hope of producing alternative fuel for a country which has endured severe fuel shortages since 1999.\u003cbr/\u003eThe economy is at an all time low, and basic commodities are in short supply and often priced out of reach for the majority of Zimbabwe's citizens. \u003cbr/\u003eFuel is at chronic shortage levels and although petrol is readily available on the black market, most can't afford it as their incomes are rapidly being eroded by inflation. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government has pinned its hopes on the jatropha tree, a drought resistant tree that produces seeds with an oil content of about 37 per cent.\u003cbr/\u003eVegetable oil extracted from the seeds of one specific type of jatropha can be refined into bio-diesel, which can be used instead of regular, petroleum-based diesel fuel.  \u003cbr/\u003eWilfred Mukosera, research scientist at the Harare Polytechnic said \"Bio-diesel is a very environmentally friendly product. It undergoes complete combustion. \u003cbr/\u003e\"What it means is that it doesn't produce carbon monoxide, so it helps in creating a cleaner environment for future generations. And also the jatropha tree itself is a very good plant because is converts carbon monoxide that is produced by petrol diesel into carbon dioxide,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government wants the trees grown commercially and is offering about ten times more for jatropha seeds than it pays for maize, Zimbabwe's staple crop. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government had tried refining sugar cane for fuel, but that project failed.\u003cbr/\u003eExporting the trees, which originate from Mexico, has been banned and the government has declared it the \"tree of the year\".\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 350 litres of oil can be gathered from the estimated 12 tonnes of seeds produced from a hectare of jatropha trees.\u003cbr/\u003eHarvesting begins two years after planting, and organic fertilisers can also be obtained as a by-product. \u003cbr/\u003eZimbabwe uses some 60 (m) million dollars worth of fuel per month, and some Zimbabwean experts say the country could save about  one-thousand dollars per day using bio-diesel. \u003cbr/\u003eBiodiesel fuels are becoming increasing popular as fuel prices rise, particularly in countries with poor, rural farming communities. \u003cbr/\u003eZimbabwe's economy collapsed in the wake of the often violent seizure of thousands of white-owned commercial farms for redistribution to blacks that began in 2000.\u003cbr/\u003eYears of erratic rains have compounded
