Close up artist taking computer keys out of keyboard.\u003cbr/\u003eWide of artists working in L'Interloque's workshop.\u003cbr/\u003eCountries around the world are trying to come up with more and more inventive ways to re-cycle rubbish.\u003cbr/\u003eIn May this year the UN said that recycling was both an environmentally friendly method of waste disposal and a valuable source of tradable goods.\u003cbr/\u003eThis approach was illustrated in countries such as Pakistan and India. \u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere artists are leading the way. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Pakistan, before June this year, residents used to discard their rubbish in the street or waste dump from where it was collected by the city workers, and taken to landfill dumps on the outskirts of the city. \u003cbr/\u003eBut this year started the first public-private project in Pakistan to take on the problem of waste recycling. \u003cbr/\u003eThe project takes organic content that is discarded by ordinary citizens, mainly consisting of household kitchen waste, and converts it into compost (organic fertiliser). \u003cbr/\u003eThe whole process takes between 70 to 90 days.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia has been a favoured dumping ground for plastic waste, mostly from industrialised countries like Canada, Denmark, Germany, UK, the Netherlands, Japan, France and the United States, according to Statistics of Foreign Trade of India. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 59,000 tons and 61,000 tons of plastic wastes have found their way to India in the years 1999 and 2000, according to Indian government import data. \u003cbr/\u003eIn May this year Horizons talked to Conserve, an NGO in New Delhi, which seems to have found a way to reduce plastic wastes. \u003cbr/\u003eIt recycles plastics to make handbags, shoes and other accessories. \u003cbr/\u003eAlso, in June this year, Horizons talked to families in Kenya relying on trash to survive. \u003cbr/\u003eDandora is situated about fifteen kilometres (9 miles) from Nairobi. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is one of the poorest districts in the country. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the scavengers are trying to find different materials which they can recycle or resell in order to get a few Kenyan shillings (local currency) for food and rent. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom the young to the elderly, all of these people are trying to sift through tonnes of waste in the desperate hope that they find something of value. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Buenas Aires refuse collectors have been called in to help design and furnish a trendy local bar.\u003cbr/\u003ePlastic, glass, paper, metal and cardboard are considered rubbish for many, but for this cooperative they are potential chairs, tables, tablecloths and rugs in the making.\u003cbr/\u003eCustomers seem to be impressed by the unusual pieces.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of them thought the \"cartoneros\" ( rubbish collectors) have succeeded in producing not only functional design, but designs that are recycled and environmentally friendly.\u003cbr/\u003eIn September Horizons talked to Giancarlo Pinnaw, whose goal is to also raise people's awareness about the environment through recycled art. \u003cbr/\u003eWooden champagne crates soon become a chest of drawers. An outdated computer, a modern light piece. And a fire extinguisher can easily be transformed into a handy coat stand. Your rubbish is their treasure.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that you have to look at everyday items and see within them a potential to become something new. \u003cbr/\u003ePinna says he wants to recreate in an urban situation \"social networks and relationships that you find in the countryside. We happen to do it through waste, the environment and art.
