Wide of Vilnius street scene with exterior of Dominican Church of the Holy Spirit
The secrets of the mummy are steadily being unearthed in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
Scores of preserved bodies have been found beneath a church in the old town, now scientists are trying to discover how they died.
This is the mummified body of a boy found beneath the Church of the Holy Spirit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
The two-year-old boy is just one of scores of mummies entombed within the maze of catacombs under the church. The crypts contain the remains of around 2,000 people, ranging from fragments of skull to complete mummified corpses.
Legend has it that this was the final resting place of plague victims, or casualties of war. The catacombs are also rumoured to be filled with ghosts, notably of a knight said to have been buried alive here.
The unique environmental conditions below ground, with moist air and stable temperatures, have kept these corpses in a surprising state of preservation. The best guess is that these people died 300 - 400 years ago.
Scientists believe this boy suffered from rickets, a childhood disease that softens and deforms bones. Rickets is caused by a deficiency of vitamin D as a result of malnutrition, and poor metabolism of calcium and phosphorus caused by inadequate exposure to sunlight.
Daumantas Liekis has been studying the mummies and their underground environment since 2009. He's a specialist in the study of the organisms that live in caves. Although similar to their surface cousins, cave dwelling organisms develop unique properties, sometimes evolving into new sub-species.
Liekis's work is part of a project examining and monitoring the biodiversity of underground life in some of Europe's major cities.
By studying the beetles found on the mummies scientists can learn much about the circumstances of death. Study of the 'dermestidae', or skin beetles found on corpses can help forensic entomologists in criminal investigations, often to determine the date of death. Beetles like those have been found on the mummies in the underground tombs of the Church of the Holy Spirit.
The mummified boy is being prepared for a full body CT scan. Some of the best preserved mummies, like the boy, will be preserved and presented in a new museum at the site. The remaining bones will be re-entombed in a specially constructed walled crypt.
The Mayor of Vilnius, Arturas Zuokas, is in no doubt about the importance of the finds:
"This is a truly unique and historically important place. I think that after the scientific research underway is completed, we need to open the area to the general public since this is not only a part of our city's history but a part of man's understanding of history as well. Everyone who comes to visit Vilnius would be able to see not only its history above ground, but would also be able to see the secrets of underground Vilnius that hide beneath the streets on which we walk everyday."
For Professor Rimantas Jankauskas, an anthropologist from Vilnius University, the mummies offer a unique insight into the past:
"We're studying the remains, the mummies of people who lived in Vilnius a long time ago. We hope to learn a lot of things - about their eating habits, their way of life, their illnesses, their physical activities, perhaps about their origins or genetic make-up. Furthermore we plan to make microscopic tests and continue the research."
The snails found in the catacombs offer more clues says Daumantas Liekis. They have been feeding off the decomposing wood coffins that contain the mummies.
"The snails are rather simple to understand. This is one of several types that fed on the mummies and they did that because the mummies were attractive to them as a source of nourishment. This confirms that he had rickets and that his cause of death was not a result of the plague. Scientists are not convinced of the plague theory but, says anthropologist Rimantas Jankauskas, they are keen to explore further:
"In the Dominican church were found about 600 buried people in a variety of conditions. Most of the corpses were skeletons but others were mummies. The corpses are of different ages and sexes and one third of them are children. Despite a relatively plain exterior, the 18th century Baroque interior is one of the county's historic gems.
The original church on this site was built in the 14th century, being rebuilt many times. In 1501 it was given over to the Lithuania Dominican order of monks who built a monastery nearby. After a series of disastrous fires, the church was rebuilt several times over the old foundations, the present structure dating from 1770.
A secret trapdoor under the altar leads to the vaults. Water streams though the labyrinth of underground passageways, making tough going for the scientists exploring the far reaches of the maze.
During the upheavals of the Napoleonic Wars, in 1807 the Tzar, Alexander I, ordered the catacombs to be turned into a prison for rebellious freethinkers and Lithuanian patriots.
Above ground today, in the Baroque splendour of the church, visitors are blissfully unawares of what lies beneath their feet.
As the research on the mummies continues, the bones of the dead are being collected and given funeral rites before being reburied.
It's a long and painstaking task, says Pastor Viktoras Bogdzevicius:
"The remains of people were lying everywhere in the basement of the church. We had to walk around the basement and collect them bone by bone, because the bones were on shelves, on boxes and on the ground."
For now the creatures of the dark are being illuminated
