Close-up of bull dog, Jessie\u003cbr/\u003eVeterinarians in New York have started using treatments on animals, which have already been perfected in human medicine.\u003cbr/\u003eThe top quality care includes ultrasounds, sophisticated heart tests known as EKGs (electrocardiography) and high-tech radiological image scans\u003cbr/\u003eThis little maltese dog is recovering from medical treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eWelcome to the animal surgery, where pets are getting quality state of the art treatments which are comparable to top quality care for humans.\u003cbr/\u003eIt may look like a regular operating theatre, but the patients on these tables are not human.\u003cbr/\u003eAcross the United States, veterinarians are offering ever more sophisticated medicine to America's 74 million dogs, 90 million cats and myriad other pets.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Manhattan, 80 veterinarians including 17 specialists staff, work at the nonprofit Animal Medical Center. \u003cbr/\u003eThe century-old research and teaching institution is open 24 hours a day.\u003cbr/\u003eSpecialist Dr. Chick Weisse performs advanced surgical cancer treatments at the Animal Medical Center, such as an embolization method that delivers chemo therapy to the liver via a wire in the femoral artery of the upper thigh. \u003cbr/\u003eToday, his patient is a German shepherd named Brute. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is even a state-of-the-art procedure in humans and that's where we were trained to do this, at a human hospital. But for non-resectable liver cancer, this would be the treatment of choice,\" says Weisse.\u003cbr/\u003eResectable is a surgical term which means the removal of all or part of an organ or tissue. \u003cbr/\u003eInitially tested on animals for research, this procedure has been perfected in human medicine and now is being offered to pets again. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We call it reverse translational medicine when we start taking some of the techniques they're using in humans and applying that to the animals,\" says Weisse.\u003cbr/\u003eA range of diagnostic tools typically associated with human medicine are also on site to help test for a host of animals diseases. \u003cbr/\u003eThis cat is ironically undergoing a cat scan - normally only used on human patients.\u003cbr/\u003eUltrasounds, EKGs and high-tech radiological image scans are performed routinely on household pets every day. \u003cbr/\u003eAnthony Fischetti has a unique job at the Animal Medical Center as well. \u003cbr/\u003eAs one of the few board certified veterinary radiologists in the world, he spends his day looking at 3-D images of animal lungs and hearts, searching for signs of disease.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Guiding treatment and prognosticating is basically what I do all day long to give people an idea what disease process is occurring in their animal,\" he says \"Is it an infection? Is it a tumour? Is it something that can be cured, or it is something that can't be?\" \u003cbr/\u003eLinear accelerators, image-guided radiation devices that deliver focused radiation, are also used at the hospital to treat cancer, a disease that's becoming more common in today's pets.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People are more willing to figure out if their pet has a problem with cancer and then also to go ahead a treat it,\" says Dr. John Farrelly, director of oncology at the Animal Medical Center, \"it's more likely that they're going to develop cancer as they get older.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut like human medicine, costs for some of these high-tech procedures can be prohibitive. \u003cbr/\u003eA stem-cell transplant tops $15,000 US Dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eCancer in dogs and cats can cost $10,000 US Dollars or more to treat. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen an animal's kidneys aren't working, dialysis could cost up to $20,000 US Dollars.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The human hospital and the animal hospital are very similar in very much the same way,\" says Kate Coyne, CEO of the Animal Medical Center. \"Healthcare for humans is expensive, healthcare for animal care is expensive. Equipment is expensive for both human and animals. We have much of the same equipment here as you would find in any human hospital.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut many feel like their money is being well spent because of the quality of care and the prolonged life for their pets.\u003cbr/\u003eApril Hallenbeck says she is happy with the care given to her dog, a Japanese Chin, Yoshi. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I felt that the doctors were amazing. And they followed up, they called every day to make sure that he was doing well.\"\u003cbr/\u003eJanet Forte, owner of English bull dog Jessie, has spent hundreds of dollars in recent weeks to diagnose the dog's newly discovered heart condition. \u003cbr/\u003eBut she says she'll gladly pay no matter what the cost.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When you take on a pet, you're taking on like a child, a loved one,\" she says, \"You do whatever it takes and however much it takes to ensure the welfare of that pet.\"\u003cbr/\u003ekeyword
