Wide of press conference\u003cbr/\u003eA new study shows that a daily dose of an AIDS drug could help reduce the risk of HIV infection among injecting drug users, US and Thai health official said in Bangkok on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe study, by the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and the Thai government, was carried out in Thailand from 2005 to 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eThe results were published online on Wednesday by the medical journal The Lancet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe study looked at about 2,413 uninfected men and women at 17 drug treatment clinics in Bangkok.\u003cbr/\u003eHalf the participants received daily Tenofovir and half were given a dummy pill. All got condoms and counselling to discourage the spread of HIV.\u003cbr/\u003eThe results showed that volunteers who took the daily pill were 49 percent less likely to become infected than those given a dummy pill.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There were 17 HIV infections among participants in the Tenofovir group, and 33 in those assigned to placebo. This translates to a 49 percent reduction in the risk of HIV infection among participants taking Tenofovir,\" said Dr. Michael Martin, Chief of Clinical Research for the study from the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.\u003cbr/\u003eBased on the findings, the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended that doctors consider prescribing Tenofovir to those who inject drugs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe drug blocks HIV from making copies and spreading through the body.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the US, Tenofovir is included in an AIDS drug called Truvada.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The result shows clear evidence using this drug to prevent HIV infection is safe and effective in reducing infection among injected drug users,\" says Kachit Choopanya, the trial's principal investigator. \u003cbr/\u003eHIV infections in drug users is a bigger problem worldwide, where they account for about one in 10 new cases each year and the vast majority of infections in some places in Eastern Europe and central Asia. In the US, they represent about one in 13 new cases.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople who inject drugs can spread the AIDS virus to others through sharing tainted needles or sex.\u003cbr/\u003eHow many people already take the drug in the US to protect against infection isn't known. \u003cbr/\u003eThe CDC only began recommending it for that purpose in the last two years, while health officials acknowledge it's not clear how many of the nation's one million injecting drug users would have the money or insurance to pay for it.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials, both in the US and Thailand, are celebrating the findings as an important advance.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is going to show us, I think, very very importantly the results of new prevention methods for users of drugs, drugs injectors, and men who have sex with men,\" said Kristie Kenney, the US Ambassador to Thailand.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe only approved version in the US is Truvada, made by Gilead Sciences, which costs more than 14,000 US dollars a year. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Thailand, the Tenofovir used in the study costs about 360 US dollars a year.\u003cbr/\u003eTruvada came on the market in 2004 to treat people who already have the AIDS virus. \u003cbr/\u003eSince then, six studies have been done in different high-risk groups to see if it could prevent infections. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo failed but health officials believe those results were
