Because I think, as I said earlier, they have got a lot of confidence in him and a lot of confidence that the truth will prevail.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Mike McCurry, White House spokesman\u003cbr/\u003eInevitably as the scrutiny on the Clinton administration intensifies, people are beginning to consider how the fallout will impact Al Gore.\u003cbr/\u003eConsidered a likely Democratic Party nominee in the year 2000, many are taking a closer look at the vice-president and weighing how he would act as president himself. \u003cbr/\u003eCharles Lewis, head of the Center for Public Integrity, a major Washington think tank, says that until recently, Al Gore was very highly regarded.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he says that the campaign finance scandal of last year, as well as the cynicism with which some Americans view politicians, have tarnished the \"Veep's\" spotless image. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"In terms of his personal character and his integrity, he's generally well regarded in the political community and in Washington and actually in the country. Only in the last year has Gore fallen from grace - the person hurt mostly in the scandals of 1997 after the '96 election was not Bill Clinton, it was Al Gore, because Gore was on a pedestal.  We looked at Al Gore as this impeccable person who would not do anything untoward - would never lie to the American people, would never do anything improper. I was advised there was nothing wrong with that practice.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Al Gore, U.S. Vice President\u003cbr/\u003eThe impact of the telephone fund-raising scandal was compounded by disclosures in the media that Gore had attended a fund raising function in a Buddhist temple.\u003cbr/\u003eSome analysts believe those incidents inflicted significant damage to Gore's squeaky-clean image and his standing in the public eye.\u003cbr/\u003eDemocrats began to fear the fund raising scandals might knock Gore off the inside track to becoming the party's leading nominee in the 2000 presidential elections.\u003cbr/\u003eThe son of prominent Tennessee Senator Al Gore Senior, Albert Gore Junior was born in Washington, DC on 31 March 1948 and grew up surrounded by the political lifestyle.\u003cbr/\u003eHe attended Harvard and Vanderbilt Universities before enlisting in the army in 1969 and serving for two years including a tour of duty in Vietnam.\u003cbr/\u003eIn May of 1970, he married Mary Elizabeth Aitcheson, familiarly known as Tipper - they have four children - Karenna, Kristin, Sarah and Albert the third. \u003cbr/\u003eGore was first elected to the U-S House of Representatives for Tennessee in 1976 and was reelected to three consecutive terms. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1984, he was elected as a U-S Senator for two terms.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile in office, Gore has attempted to single himself out within the administration as a proponent of the environment, technology issues and government efficiency.\u003cbr/\u003eAl Gore fully knows what toll the media and public attention can take on public figures. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd he has shown a greater ability recently to poke fun at himself, which he did this week even in light of the latest scandal. \u003cbr/\u003eGore warned his audience not to jump to conclusions over reports that President Clinton had telephoned the intern he is alleged to have had an affair with - making light of his own troubles with the telephone and fundraising.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:  (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The lesson, of course, was don't believe everything that you hear over the telephone.
