Wide of transport vessel\u003cbr/\u003eThe Iranian consul in the southern Iraqi city of Basra claimed on Thursday that British soldiers had surrounded his office and fired shots in the air.\u003cbr/\u003eBritain denied the allegation, which comes at a critical period in the crisis over Iran's seizure of 15 British sailors and marines.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ministry of Defence in London said the shooting, which happened at a house near the Iranian consulate was an exchange of gunfire after British troops on a foot patrol were ambushed.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever Iranian Consul-General Mohammed Ridha Nasir Baghban said British forces had engaged in a \"provocative act\" that \"could worsen the situation of the British sailors\".\u003cbr/\u003eBaghban claimed British forces surrounded the consulate at about 10:00 a.m. (0730GMT) and fired randomly into the air.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a statement distributed to journalists, British forces in Basra denied any aggressive action against the Iranian consulate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe statement said that that a British patrol was ambushed near the consulate and had returned fire.\u003cbr/\u003eBaghban made the allegation as Iranian negotiator Ali Larijani said on Thursday that Iran might delay the release of the one female British\u003cbr/\u003esailor held, if Britain took the issue of the 15 detained sailors and marines to the U.N. Security Council or froze relations. \u003cbr/\u003eLarijani made his comments on Iranian state radio. \u003cbr/\u003eBritain earlier on Thursday asked the Security Council to support a call for the immediate release of detainees, saying in a statement they were operating in Iraqi waters under a mandate from the Security Council and at the request of Iraq. \u003cbr/\u003eThe issue was expected to be debated by the U.N. later on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eIran captured 15 British sailors and marines last week in the Shatt al Arab waterway between Iraq and Iran. \u003cbr/\u003eBritain insists the crew were in Iraqi waters when they were captured; Tehran claims they had entered Iranian waters.\u003cbr/\u003eIraqi coastguards were continuing to patrols the waterway  on Thursday and AP Television
