Close-up of langoustines\u003cbr/\u003eFor centuries, the economy of Galicia in northwest Spain has been anchored in the fishing industry. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom ocean-going vessels that trawl the deep Atlantic waters to small wooden craft that work closer to shore, many communities in the region rely on the sea to make a living. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Spain's ongoing financial crisis, coupled with reduced quotas for fish catches, is having an impact on Galicia's traditional fish and shellfish workers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest numbers from Spain's central bank offer no relief, with Spain's economy shrinking 0.4 per cent in the third quarter, compared to the previous three months. \u003cbr/\u003eSpain is one of five eurozone countries - along with Greece, Italy, Portugal and Cyprus - that are in recession according to the EU's statistics office.\u003cbr/\u003eAt Vigo's busy Bouzas port, fishing boats unload their cargo round the clock, depending on their catch. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile he waits for a shipment of sardines to dock, Diego Gomez supervises workers sorting a catch of spiny sea urchins which arrived earlier. \u003cbr/\u003eFishing is \"one of the principal industries of Galicia\" says 34-year old Gomez, general manager of a cooperative which manages and processes the catches from a number of boats and fishermen. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We've noted, above all, the quotas have gone down,\" he says. \"It's not got anything to do with the crisis... we've always got less fish here, less to sell of course\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"What's happening with the crisis? Well we've noticed that demand has dropped,\" says Gomez, who studied business administration before embarking on his 10-year career in the fishing industry.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"But how can we get on top of this?\" he asks. \"By working more. We have to work more, you've got to work twice as much, double, to get the same benefits. Not everyone has to work more, but to obtain the same results, it's a much greater effortďż˝ a much greater effort.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the shipment arrives, Gomez and his staff help the crew unload the sardines. \u003cbr/\u003eA crane on deck picks up plastic pallets of fish as expectant seagulls swoop around. \u003cbr/\u003eThe catch is small, just a few dozen crates, and they're quickly wrapped in plastic and taken into the warehouse for processing. \u003cbr/\u003eLater, they'll be sold at auction to the region's restaurants and fishmongers. \u003cbr/\u003eGalicia has already been badly affected by Spain's financial woes. \u003cbr/\u003eAt 22 per cent, the region has the fifth highest unemployment rate in Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eSome austerity cuts were introduced here by the local ruling Partido Popular (PP) government before they were introduced nationally. \u003cbr/\u003eAs financial hardship bites for many families, luxury food items like lobster, scallops, octopus and some of the more expensive fish varieties are out of the reach of household budgets. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In general, fish is an expensive product,\" says Diego Gomez. \"There are fish that are worth between between 1 and 10 euros (1.30-13 US dollars), and people are okay with paying that. But fish that cost more than 10 euros (13 US dollars), not everyone will be okay to pay that.\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's always been a luxury. Fish, quality fish, fish costing 15 euros (19.4 US dolars) and more. It's always been like this, it's always been a luxury to eat them,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eAt a nearby fishmongers, business is brisk. \u003cbr/\u003eBut local residents say that prices here - and at the many popular fish restaurants in Vigo - have risen. \u003cbr/\u003eSpain is in its second recession in three years, and the country is one of the focal points in Europe's financial crisis. \u003cbr/\u003eIf Spain defaults on its debts or needs a full-blown bailout, the finances - and credibility - of the 17-country group that uses the euro could be stretched to breaking point.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government has introduced austerity measures and financial and labour reforms to convince investors it is getting a grip on its accounts. \u003cbr/\u003eThe measures have led to many strikes and protests and the country faces its second general strike in a year in November.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Galicia's fishing industry, the end of the financial crisis cannot come too soon,
