Mid of passenger jeeps on Manila street
Filipino voters got their first peek earlier this month at the country''s automated election system, during mock elections organised by the Philippines elections commission.
The dummy run was in preparation for the country''s first automated voting scheduled in May.
About six thousand registered voters were pre-selected by the Commission on Elections, or COMELEC, to participate in mock polls that were held in nine polling centres across the Philippines.
The way the ballots are filled in has changed.
Previously voters had to write the names of the candidates.
Now the ballots to be used in the automated election system will require voters to just shade an oval space right before the name of the candidate they would like to vote for.
Each precinct will have several Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines.
Once the ballots are cast, the voter will insert the ballot in the PCOS machine to be counted.
After the machine validates the ballot, it will be sent to a translucent ballot box underneath the PCOS machine.
Representatives from Smartmatic, the Venezuelan company that won the bid for the country''s first multi billion-peso project to automate the nationwide elections, were on hand to witness the mock elections and provide some insight on what the PCOS does to count the ballots.
"Once you put the ballot inside the machine, rollers will suck that in and then the machine, the scanner will take a picture of the ballot above and below, so you will have both sides of the ballots taken a picture of.
