One can debate whether the turbulence of Latin  American asset values reflects contagion effects from Asia, the influence of  developments in U-S financial markets, or home grown causes. The United States has a very strong stake in the restoration of confidence,  sustainable flows of capital and a return to growth in countries where financial problems  have been most serious.  Equally, we have a strong stake in avoiding further contagion  to other emerging economies.
