far reaches  of the Pacific gathered to press for a free-trade zone stretching from the jungles of  Papua New Guinea to the skyscrapers of Shanghai.\u003cbr/\u003eJapan has the responsibility of putting together a plan to help meet APEC's goal of  building an Asia-Pacific free-trade zone by 2020.\u003cbr/\u003eNew Zealand's Foreign Minister Don McKinnon gave a robust greeting\u003cbr/\u003eto his Japanese counterpart signalling what the mood of this meeting is likely to be over  the next two days.\u003cbr/\u003eNew Zealand will join Australia, the United States and Canada to push Japan, China,  Korea and Taiwan into a proper free trade agreement.\u003cbr/\u003eThe four east Asian nations want to exempt farming from any trade agreement.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo days of ministerial talks will culminate in a leaders' summit in the grounds of  Osaka castle at the weekend.\u003cbr/\u003eJapan has launched one of its biggest ever security operations in Osaka amid fears of a  terrorist attack.\u003cbr/\u003eThe so called Doomsday cult, Aum Shinri Kyo has reportedly threatened to disrupt the  APEC meeting.\u003cbr/\u003eJapan has hinted that it might try to lift protectionist minister Takami Eto resigned under pressure for  saying Japan 'did some good' during its 35-year colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.\u003cbr/\u003eThe controversy had threatened to scuttle a meeting between South Korean President  Kim Young-sam and Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile several south-east Asian nations got together for talks on closer inter-
