apparently from a nearby smelting plant, continued to block trucks delivering supplies to the smelter on Tuesday, amid growing anger over China's rampant industrial pollution.\u003cbr/\u003eFighting between angry parents and scores of police broke out on Sunday, and trucks delivering coal to the plant were stoned.  \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral hundred villagers tore down fences and blocked traffic outside the Dongling Lead and Zinc Smelting Company in Shaanxi province after news of the poisoning emerged last week, state media and villagers said. \u003cbr/\u003eAt least 615 out of 731 children in the two villages near the Dongling smelter in Changqing township in Baoji have tested positive for lead poisoning, which can damage the nervous and reproductive systems and cause high blood pressure, anaemia and memory loss. \u003cbr/\u003eLead levels in some of the children were more than 10 times the level considered safe by China.\u003cbr/\u003eAssociated Press journalists outside the factory saw no signs of workers on Tuesday, while about 50 police officers guarded the compound from inside the gate. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother 50 officers sat in police buses. \u003cbr/\u003eThe windows of the factory's reception area and security office were shattered.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Changqing, where the villages lie, Mayor Dai apologised to residents for the poisoning and vowed the plant will not be allowed to open again until it meets health standards, the official Xinhua News Agency said.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the plant halted production only on Monday, more than a week after the stop-work order was issued, because of safety reasons, according to Xinhua.\u003cbr/\u003eVillagers were enraged by the plant's apparent defiance of an August 6 order from environmental authorities to suspend operations, Xinhua said. \u003cbr/\u003eA man from the Madaokou village, about 500 yards (meters) from the factory, said residents believed at least two villagers were taken from their homes by police Monday night, following the unrest.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the Baoji city government sent eight officials to his village Tuesday to try to pacify residents.\u003cbr/\u003eChina's breakneck economic development has left much of its soil, air and waterways dangerously polluted, and environmental showdowns with outraged residents are growing. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities routinely pledge to close down polluting industries, but often back down because of their importance to the local economy.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, a few hundred children were being tested on Tuesday for lead poisoning in a school in Luobosi village in Changqing.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents said they could still see and feel the effects of pollution caused by the plant.\u003cbr/\u003eAir quality tests done near the smelting plant in Shaanxi found unusually high lead levels, according to Xinhua, although officials say groundwater, surface water, soil and company waste discharge all meet national standards.\u003cbr/\u003eCalls to the government offices of Fengxiang county and the city of Baoji rang unanswered on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Dongling smelter is set in the Changqing Industrial Park. \u003cbr/\u003eThe park was set in this area, as part of the government \"Go West\" policy, a plan to attract industries to the western inland part of China. \u003cbr/\u003eIn response of this policy many polluting industries have found in this area a new ground to relocate industries not allowed in other parts of China. \u003cbr/\u003eVillagers in the small towns neighbouring the plant say they want the factory to move out. \u003cbr/\u003eThey have been offered to relocate, but they claim the new areas are also polluted, as they are only a few hundred meters away from their original villages. \u003cbr/\u003eVillagers also complain that they originally opposed the settling of the plant, because their land was taken away and no proper compensation was given to
