Various shots of swinging Muriquis.
Brazil's largest monkey is endangered because of its shrinking habitat caused by human population growth and deforestation.
But now conservationists are championing the Muriqui or Wooly Spider Monkey and have proposed it becomes the official mascot of the 2016 Olympic Games, which are to be held in Brazil.
This is Brachyteles arachnoides, also known as the southern muriqui or Woolly Spider Monkey, one of the largest and one of the most endangered monkeys in the western hemisphere.
The Primate Centre of Rio de Janeiro is home to more than five hundred animals from rare species, many on the verge of extinction.
The golden-headed lion tamarin ( Leontopithecus chrysomelas) is just one of the animals listed on the 2010 The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, listed as endangered.
Paula Breves, a veterinarian, is president of newly founded Bio Atlantica NGO, dedicated to the preservation of the Muriqui or Wooly Spider Monkey.
Breves has seen and filmed previously unknown groups of Southern Muriqui living in remote areas high in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro state.
Dr. Alcides Pissinatti is an expert on the species which he helped reproduce in captivity and is in favour of the Wooly Sider Monkey becoming the mascot of the 2016 games.
Other potential candidates are the better known Golden Lion Tamarin or even the Ocelot, a spotted cat. But Breves and Pissinatti want the Muriqui to be chosen, to raise awareness about the creature's plight.
"If we do nothing" says Dr. Pissinatti, "it will soon be extinct".
Dr. Pissinatti was responsible for the first reproduction in captivity of this monkey back in the 1990's.
Since then thirteen monkeys have been born here.
He was able to do this by introducing certain species of tree branches in the monkey's diet, garapa or apuleia leiocarpa, pitanga or eugenia uniflora and arariba or centrolobium tomentosum. (EDITOR'S NOTE -: the first name refers to the actual tree that he cuts, the second to a second species, not shown, and the third to the broad leaved branches that we see the monkeys eating)
The centre is located in the Atlantic Rainforest and the monkey's preferred species were planted near the cages.
Having grown tall, a large pole is needed to reach the canopy and cut the branches.
These monkeys are very agile and frequently exhibit their acrobatic abilities while caged or even more so in the wild, making them perfect champions of the Olympics.
One of the largest of the monkeys in South America, the muriqui is interesting to scientists because it is more like African apes than any others in the New World.
The name muriqui comes from the Tupi Indians of Brazil, this is now the preferred name as scientists feel that the name woolly spider monkey was misleading, implying that the animal is a hybrid of woolly monkeys (Genus Lagothrix) and spider monkeys (Genus Ateles), when in fact muriquis are unique.
A unique characteristic of New World monkeys, the prehensile tail serves as a fifth arm and is used for supporting the body while moving between trees in the forest canopy.
Paula Breves has seen these monkeys in the wild, a previously undetected population was discovered in the last ten years in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro state.
Breves is fully dedicated to the cause of the Muriqui and thinks the effort will help save the Atlantic Rainforest, an environment richer than the Amazon of which less tan seven percent still remains.
"The Muriqui unlike many other primates, requires an extremely well protected, pristine environment. But what we see here in Rio de Janeiro state is that parks and conservation units are very far from each other and fragmented. And around them many housing developments and farms." says Breves.
Breves hopes for a day when the Muriqui becomes a familiar name in Brazilian schools and in the media.
If people become interested in preserving this animal they will also have to be in favour of preserving the local forests, threatened by population growth and land speculation.
The Atlantic coastal forest of Brazil forest where the muriqui are found has been separate from the Amazon for 2 million years, allowing it to develop species completely different from those found in the Amazon.
There are two species of muriqui, Brachyteles arachnoides or southern muriqui and Brachyteles hypoxanthus or northern muriqui.
The main difference between the northern and the southern muriqui is the presence of a small thumb in the northern variety. Otherwise, however, they are almost identical in appearance.
Brachyteles arachnoides or southern muriqui is listed as endangered and Brachyteles hypoxanthus is listed as critically
