The artist in...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eTitle: Writing To Vermeer\u003cbr/\u003eDate: 10th July 2000\u003cbr/\u003eLocation: New York\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the Netherlands' best loved artists is the subject of a new opera having its US premiere at New York's Lincoln Center, Tuesday July 11th. \u003cbr/\u003eThe artist in question is Johannes Vermeer and the opera, Writing to Vermeer, is being performed by The De Nederlandse Opera company together with a Holsten cow from upstate New York. \u003cbr/\u003eLOUIS ANDRIESSEN wrote the music and film and stage director, PETER GREENAWAY, is responsible for the libretto. Peter Greenaway also directs the performance with SASKIA BODDEKE. \u003cbr/\u003eJohannes Vermeer's life does not immediately lend itself to moments of high drama. Not for him the grand tableaux inspired by the Bible or Greek mythology, nor portraits of monarchs or emperors. No, he preferred to express his fascination with color and light in domestic scenes of great intimacy. But Peter Greenaway is nothing if not imaginative himself. He and Andriessen chose to focus on two weeks in Vermeer's life, when he made a rare trip away from his home in Delft to The Hague.Greenaway and Louis Andriesson make several assumptions. Firstly that he is kept abreast of news of his family by letter and, secondly, that he is absorbed by the growing crisis gripping the Dutch republic as it prepares to breach the country's dykes to hold off invasion by the French. \u003cbr/\u003eThe resulting 100 minute opera was first presented by the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam's Muziektheater in December. It was later performed at the Adelaide Festival in March. Both productions were greeted with ecstatic reviews complimenting the visual strength of the piece (courtesy of Greenaway's cinematic craft) and Andriesson's minimalist music, which subtly alludes the past by introducing strings with a 'continuo group' of two pianos, harps, guitars, cymbals and percussion. \u003cbr/\u003eLouis Andriesson comes from a background of jazz and avant garde composition. He has evolved a style employing elemental harmonic, melodic and rhythmic materials, heard in totally distinctive instrumentation. He previously worked with Peter Greenaway in 1994 on a production called Rosa (a Horse Drama), also performed by the De Nederlandse Opera. The range of his inspiration is wide, from the music of Charles Ives in Anachronie 1 to the art of Mondrian in De Stijl and medieval poetic visions in Hadewijch. \u003cbr/\u003ePeter Greenaway started out as a painter before working as a film editor for the UK's Central Office of Information. He made his feature debut with The Draughtsman's Contract. He has since made A Zed and Two Noughts, The Belly of an Architect, Drowning By Numbers, The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover and The Pillow Book. His most recent movie is 8 1/2 Women. He has curated art exhibitions around Europe and contributed works to exhibitions all over the world. \u003cbr/\u003eThe production includes a real live Holsten Cow, called Hailey in real life, which will be commuting to the city from upstate to perform in the show. The cow's salary is being donated to Sanctuary for Animals, a 300-acre home for abandoned and abused animals operated by the Dawn Animal Agency, which represents the cow.
