Most people try to avoid jellyfish...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eMany of us just see jellyfish as washed up blobs on the beach. \u003cbr/\u003eBut an exhibition in Manila is putting jellyfish in a whole new light. \u003cbr/\u003eThis audio and visual delight is putting jellyfish in the spotlight. \u003cbr/\u003eMost people try to avoid jellyfish in fear of the sting that can leave a excruciating pain, and a lasting scar - and on occasions can be fatal. \u003cbr/\u003eBut an Oceanarium in the Philippines is putting the semi-transparent, sea creatures up close for the general public. \u003cbr/\u003eDubbed as the \"Jelly dancing sea fairies,\" thousands of these marine invertebrates are displayed in a dark room with only the glow from the aquariums of changing lights combined with classical music playing at the background.\u003cbr/\u003eOcean park's Marine biologist/Aquarium supervisor Charlie Ylaya prepares a container of Artemia zooplankton to feed an upside down jellyfish. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says it is one of the seven species of jellyfish that are on display.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is the jelly fish exhibit of the Manila Ocean Park, we showcase different types of jelly fish that are found in the Philippines.\"\u003cbr/\u003eYlaya says the exhibition surprises and delights. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Our visitors are amazed with our different jellyfish aquarium settings, like the (changing colour) LED lights which has a unique effect combined with music.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition is designed to change people's thoughts about jellyfish, says Ylaya. He says the sea creatures are not as harmful as believed. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is also to educate the people about their perception that jellyfish are harmful, they just drift with the sea's current, we also want to remove the people's perception that jelly fish attack people but they really don't.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the UK Marine Biological Association, jellyfish consist of a gelatinous 'umbrella' above a circle of tentacles that surround a central mouth. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mouth opens into a simple stomach and is also used to get rid of any waste. The umbrella is surrounded by sensory organs, which detect light, gravity and chemicals in the water.\u003cbr/\u003eJellyfish have stinging cells, called nematocysts. The 'sting' is coiled and fired like a harpoon when triggered. All species have nematocysts in their tentacles, some also have them on their umbrella.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd what's the best thing to do if you are stung? \u003cbr/\u003e\"One remedy (for the sting) is to apply acidic liquids like vinegar, which dissolves the nematocyst or the stinging cells of the jelly fish,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eVisitors are fascinated by the graceful movements of the marine animals. \u003cbr/\u003eTwenty-four year-old German tourist Elias Breiter from Berlin says it is amazing to see how the animals behave up close.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think it is really worth it to visit it, I think it's nice to see something about the ocean life specially here at the jelly fish room, it is fun to watch. It is amazing how you see how animals are behaving and how they look like from so close.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBefore the exhibition, he just experienced the dead jellyfish that washed up on the beach:  \"Ah in the real life yeah, only but it wasn't like that you cannot compare with each other because it was just a dead jellyfish at the beach when I saw it, but it was kind of like disgusting and not amazing like here.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFilipina tourist Michelle Barr who is now based in London recounts her unfortunate encounter with a jellyfish while having a dip in the sea in the mid-1990s.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"I felt some really stingy and it really-really hurts like literally I had to run straight to the shore and everyone was panicking because it was so painful I couldn't contain myself, someone had to get vinegar to put on my legs but even after they washed it,  still it really-really hurts so I will never forget that,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eBut after seeing the exhibit Barr can't help admire how beautiful they are.\u003cbr/\u003eManila, Philippines - June 13, 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
