Like here we have a composting toilet and that's one of the first things we did at Abed (Rabba)'s farm as well is like trying to get on top of this question of waste, because Abed (Rabba) has no running water and that's the other thing with composting toilets is you're saving water. Wide of farm with Abed Rabba and Gray \u003cbr/\u003eIn a rocky West Bank valley, four young volunteers from Britain are experimenting with unconventional ways to deal with the realities of Israeli occupation.\u003cbr/\u003eOn a small farm dotted with olive, almond, apricot and fig trees, the group is developing farming techniques to help Palestinians squeeze as much as possible out of their land.\u003cbr/\u003eIn this arid valley, a group of young volunteers from around the world have come to help West Bank farmers cope with the harsh dry climate and the practical difficulties caused by the political situation in the region. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce they've had breakfast, this group will go to the farm down the valley to harvest rainwater, compost trash and turn toilet waste into fertiliser\u003cbr/\u003eThe farming techniques are designed to help Palestinians farmers make a living from their land.\u003cbr/\u003eAlice Gray, a climatologist by training, is one of the founding members of the group based at a house called Bustan Qaraaqa, or Tortoise Garden, on the edge of this town near Bethlehem.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The status quo of how people live, particularly in the West Bank ... is one of massive environmental destruction and what we're trying to understand is how as individuals we can take control of our lives in a way that brings us back into step with the environment,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe West Bank, which Israel captured and occupied in the 1967 Mideast War, would be the larger part of a Palestinian state envisioned by the U.S. and Europe, but 60 percent of it remains under full Israeli control, with limited autonomy for the rest, including Beit Sahour, where the house is located.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael's overall control has hampered Palestinian access to water and sewage networks, according to a recent World Bank report. \u003cbr/\u003eIt says the 7.1 million people living in Israel and its West Bank settlements have access to four times more water per capita than the West Bank's 2.3 million Palestinians, 10 percent of whom are not connected to a water network.\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian infrastructure projects require Israeli permits, the report says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Tortoise Garden project aims to circumvent these controls by exploiting nature to the hilt.\u003cbr/\u003eGray and her friends leased the farm last year from a Palestinian family.\u003cbr/\u003eThey live in an old stone house overlooking the valley, and have planted vegetable gardens and a nursery with over 1,000 trees. \u003cbr/\u003eApricot, fig, almond and olive trees dot the three-acre farm by the house. \u003cbr/\u003eA nearby cave serves as a chicken coop. \u003cbr/\u003eOthers caves are used for parties or to house nature-friendly visitors. \u003cbr/\u003eA stay in one of the house's guest rooms costs $18, with lodgers - from the U.S., Britain, Spain among others - getting a discount and free lunch if they join in the farm work.\u003cbr/\u003eTom, who did not give his last name, is another of the group's founders.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that unique amongst local farmers the group can experiment with new ideas and take risks.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We can take risks that typically you know farmers or parents can't take because they've got more limited resources and they're accountable to their families whereas if we do something that fails, there aren't such consequences for us,\" \u003cbr/\u003eA composting latrine has replaced the porcelain toilet, which now holds a giant plant. \u003cbr/\u003eUsers can gaze out at the scenery, while waste drops into a cave below. Mixed with sawdust and left for six months, it becomes fertiliser.\u003cbr/\u003eHousehold waste water irrigates crops, and shallow trenches crisscross the valley capturing rainwater for the orchard. A cistern the group built to hold rainwater will soon double as a fish tank.\u003cbr/\u003eGray explains the location of the cistern \"it's placed to harvest the runoff from the roads, because road runoff is one of the most amounts of water you can harvest because obviously it just goes along the surface of the tarmac instead of soaking into the soil.\" \u003cbr/\u003eTo spread their techniques, the team works with a few farmers and associations. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far only a few Palestinian farmers have shown interest in their experiment, but the volunteers hope word will spread and draw more converts.\u003cbr/\u003eAbdel-Fatah Abed Rabba lives on a farm inside the boundaries of Jerusalem that has no running water or electricity.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group advised him to in order to help his crops in the hot summer to place plastic bottles with perforated bottoms near the trees' roots, and fills once a day. \u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere, he has piled rocks to direct rainwater into his cistern.\u003cbr/\u003eGray explains the other improvements on Abed Rabba's farm.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We're trying to look at different systems you could do.
