At a time when there's growing national and international attention on economic disparities, labor unions, worker advocacy groups and Democrats are hoping to build public support to raise the federal minimum wage of $7.25, or about $15,000 a year for full-time work.
Protesters are calling for pay of $15 an hour, but the figure is seen more as a rallying point than a near-term possibility.
In New York City, about 60 protestors chanted and held signs in front of a Wendy's in Brooklyn. They effectively blocked anyone from entering the restaurant during the lunch rush.
The protestors were a mix of low wage fast food workers from nearby restaurants, along with clergy, and activist groups.
Jenny Paris, 19, works part time at Popeyes in Brooklyn for $7.30 an hour to help support her family at home. She hopes to start college in January, but is unsure how she'll pay for it since much of her income goes to other family members who are too young to work. She just had to get a second job.
"Basically I'm making $7.30 an hour and going to college in January," said Paris. "You know there's a lot of people in the house. My mom can't do it. Somebody got to help her do it and it's become really difficult. I've had to get a second job to make my ends meet, and still no ends are meeting."
Another protestor at the Wendy's was Eduardo Shore, 58, who makes $7.25 an hour at Kentucky Fried Chicken/ Pizza Hut. He also works part time at JFK airport, working 75 hours a week to support his family of four.
"Fifteen dollars (an hour) would give me a better style of living," said Shore. "I can live in a better environment."
The push for higher pay in the fast-food industry faces an uphill battle. The industry competes aggressively on value offerings and companies have warned that they would need to raise prices if wages were hiked. Most fast-food locations are also owned and operated by franchisees, which lets companies such as McDonald's Corp., Burger King Worldwide Inc. and Yum Brands Inc. say that they don't control worker pay.
However, labor advocates have pointed out that companies control many other aspects of restaurant operations through their franchise agreements, including menus, suppliers and equipment.
Fast-food workers have historically been seen as difficult to unionize, given the industry's high turnover rates. But the Service Employees International Union, which represents more than 2 million workers in health care, janitorial and other industries, has been providing considerable organizational and financial support to the push for higher pay over the past year.
Regular Wendy's customer, attorney Channon Wetstone, 44, was not able to get into the restaurant Thursday to eat because of the protestors, but said she wholly supports their cause.
"I think it's like slave labor for them. It gets really hectic at lunchtime," said Wetstone. "There's a lot of people and they are dealing with a lot of people who are pushy and they are just not pleasant toward them and they work very hard."
Wetstone said she would be willing to pay more for her food to give the workers a raise.
"I would say 50 cents 75 cents more, that would do it, I would do it," she said.
Another would-be customer, Amalia Moulton, admitted that she would probably have to start eating more at home if fast food prices went up, as she's currently unemployed.
The National Restaurant Association, an industry lobbying group, said most those protesting were union workers and that "relatively few" workers have participated in past actions. It called the demonstrations a "campaign engineered by national labor groups."
McDonald's said in a statement that it's "committed to providing our employees with opportunities to succeed." The company, based in Oak Brook, Ill., said it offers employees advancement opportunities, competitive pay and benefits.
Supporters of wage hikes have been more successful at the state and local level. California, Connecticut and Rhode Island raised their minimum wages this year. Last month, voters in New Jersey approved an increase in the minimum to $8.25 an hour, up from $7.25 an hour.
1. Wide of protestors in front of Wendy's
2.
