Various of fly past\u003cbr/\u003eAfrican soldiers from countries in France's former colonial empire marched in the annual Paris Bastille Day parade on Wednesday, but a downpour put a damper on festivities. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother traditional Bastille Day event, the lavish garden party at the presidential palace, was cancelled as France's government - like those around Europe - tries to rein in runaway debt. \u003cbr/\u003eGovernment spokesman Luc Chatel said skipping the party would save �780,000 (992,000 dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eTo open the parade, France invited 13 African countries that are celebrating five decades of independence to march down the Champs-Elysees avenue, ahead of French troops. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the invitation forced President Nicolas Sarkozy to defend himself from critics who say he is celebrating the \"Francafrique,\" the French nickname for what many see as a secretive, unhealthy network of political and business interests between France and its former African colonies. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring a lunch with African leaders on Tuesday, Sarkozy insisted that the invitation was not an \"expression of colonial nostalgia, or a French temptation to take over your independence celebrations.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe also said the government would submit a draft law to ensure that veterans from France's former colonies are entitled to the same pension payments as their French counterparts - a longstanding source of resentment in many former French colonies. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Wednesday's parade, a unit of women soldiers from Benin opened the parade. Other countries invited were Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Gabon, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Chad and Togo.
