As the onboard computer spots traffic lights turn green it smoothly moves the car forward into a three-lane roundabout in the centre of Berlin.\u003cbr/\u003eThrough a maze of lights and criss-crossing lanes the car straightens up as the Brandenburg Gate appears in sight. No driver error, no road rage.\u003cbr/\u003eSafety driver and project manager Tinosh Ganjineh describes the relatively simple navigational principles of the driverless car:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our vehicle positions itself with a GPS receiver. It''s able to determine its location on a digital map. The information from the sensors is gathered and processed on a central computer in order for the vehicle to be able to react to its surrounding. Different systems then produce control commands for the acceleration, brakes and the steering wheel.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe customised electronics spread out in the back of this Volkswagen Passat cost around EUR 400,000 (USD 545,000).\u003cbr/\u003eBut much of the underlying technology is already widely available says Tinosh Ganjineh:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Many technologies we use in our autonomous vehicle are already used in mass-production cars: the lane assistant, the adoptive distance control or parking assistance. What is going to be interesting in the future is primarily the camera-based traffic light recognition and improvement of positioning. At the moment, position is based on GPS receiver and that leads to problems in narrow streets and tunnels.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNavigation is very precise, capable of positioning the vehicle within a few centimetres. It''s much more sophisticated than consumer devices where the margin of error is measured in metres.\u003cbr/\u003eData covering the route for the test drive has also been customised, with traffic light positions entered manually and other details added to publicly available \"Sat-nav\" navigation maps.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the move, a battery of cameras and laser-based radars detect other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, any other obstacles - as well as figuring out the stop/go status of traffic lights.\u003cbr/\u003eThe car may get a few odd looks for all the electronics mounted on the roof, but not for its driving.\u003cbr/\u003eWeaving its way through the traffic, few seemed to notice that the vehicle was completely operated by the computer and not the man.\u003cbr/\u003eFear of the unknown is one of the obstacles that driverless cars will have to overcome, says sales manager Patrick Vogel:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is a typical problem with innovations, to overcome the status quo. People like to refer to the things they know. The insurers like to work with accident statistics of the particular model of car. Ours is a unique case, there hasn''t been a driverless vehicle in normal traffic before.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the main administrative obstacle was finding an insurance company willing to cover the car.\u003cbr/\u003eBeing reliant on a computer could make the car vulnerable to software glitches or even hacking.\u003cbr/\u003eWithout a human driver in charge it''s unclear who should take responsibility in event of an accident - the passenger, the manufacturer or the software programmer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Berlin prototype is a result of four years development. In June, Berlin''s traffic regulators issued a permit allowing for limited road tests.\u003cbr/\u003eInternationally, several other groups have also been working on driverless technology. One of them, sponsored by Google, has been testing a robotic Toyota Prius in Nevada in the US, the first place in the world to allow driverless cars on the road.\u003cbr/\u003eEach new prototype improves functionality, but none has yet been able to fully replace the human driver and become a reality on the road.\u003cbr/\u003eDirector of the AutoNOMUS project Professor Dr Raul Rojas explains how their latest car has overcome one of the early problems:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The main problem that we had to solve with this kind of robotic car is that the car does not feel like a robot. The car comes to you, you drive the car and then you release the car for other customers.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut getting the price down to affordable levels will be another big challenge says Ganjineh:\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think it''s an incremental process. One can expect autonomous cars to be allowed on limited stretches of highway in the next five to ten years. But it will be fifteen to twenty years till it (the technology) will become 100 percent functional in complex city traffic.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDevelopers hope that driverless cars will reduce road accidents by eliminating driver error; reduce congestion by making better use of available road space; and cut the number of vehicles needed worldwide by encouraging more car sharing.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was the stuff of science fiction just a generation ago but now driverless trains, on fixed rails systems, are commonplace around the world\u003cbr/\u003eSo, could driverless cars be an end to road rage and driver stress?
