Number one, to clean up our image that we were doing something as seaweed farmers and on the other hand, to diversify our activity, seeing as we usually only send raw, dry material abroad which has no more refined value. So it was a way of diversifying our activity. We thought of a few projects. One project was this one, the production of paper made out of seaweed which was a bit crazy, because it moved away from what we knew about. seaweed.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil someone had a bright idea -- turn it into paper. \u003cbr/\u003eEarly morning on the beaches of La Herradura in Coquimbo.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is meant to be the region''s tourist gem. \u003cbr/\u003eBut much of the time the beach is invaded by heaps of excess algae - which cuts oxygen levels, kills fish - and creates an awful smell.   \u003cbr/\u003eEvery morning, groups of locals spend hours in the water collecting the seaweed.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of it is weighed up and packaged and eventually ends up in Asia where it is sold as raw material.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clumps of algae have meant jobs for local people over many years. \u003cbr/\u003eThese divers spend hours in the water gathering up seaweed so that it can be sold off.\u003cbr/\u003eOften they dive at night when the water is clearer and they can work more efficiently.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough seaweed exports generates the livelihoods for local families in an region characterised by low incomes.\u003cbr/\u003eBut not all the seaweed can be sold - some sixty tonnes of the seaweed is left over every day. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has no commercial value and this has become a headache for the local council.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have to spend thousands of dollars cleaning it up everyday to keep beaches clean. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the remnants have inspired a local business project. \u003cbr/\u003eThe idea is to make paper which can be used for greetings cards and creative stationary. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is a learn-as-you-go business experiment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe machine has been developed by the business founders and is still being tweaked. \u003cbr/\u003eMaria Graciela Ortiz began a business dedicated to cleaning up the beaches of Coquimbo in the north of Chile - it was a way of bringing some extra money in.\u003cbr/\u003eNow she uses the non-commercial seaweed collected every day to make paper. \u003cbr/\u003eShe had the idea when she received a greetings card made out of seaweed and she started experimenting herself at home - in the bath.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project won a regional competition for entrepreneurial innovation.\u003cbr/\u003eChile''s innovation body CORFO funded the research needed for the project. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is the chemical free-drying and milling process.\u003cbr/\u003eIt breaks down the algae into ''algae flour'' - which is then mixed with recycled paper and cellulose from wood. \u003cbr/\u003eFor Maria Graciela the challenge was to move away from just providing raw material to other countries, and producing a more refined product of their own.\u003cbr/\u003eConventional paper-making is a big consumer of trees, water and energy - several tons of trees to make one ton of paper. \u003cbr/\u003eHere it''s much less.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe paper is acid free, chlorine free, long lasting and totally recyclable -- and is about to go on sale in Chile for the first
