We've known the Kombi since we were kids so we got really sad.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe vehicle has found its way into the hearts of Brazilians like Enio Guarnieri, 54, who stood grinning next to the blue and white 1972 van he keeps in his cluttered garage in a working class Sao Paulo neighbourhood.\u003cbr/\u003eGuarnieri bought the vehicle a year ago to stoke childhood memories. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen he was 10, his father taught him to drive a van.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is charismatic so you fall in love with it, you always want to be touching, to be driving, improving, and innovating it,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eSao Paulo advertising executive Marcello Serpa has a VW which he painted in a 1960s hippie-inspired design. \u003cbr/\u003eThe van is bright green, yellow, blue and red with cartoon-like drawings of his wife, daughters, and himself - surfboard in hand.\u003cbr/\u003eSerpa says the van's spirit will live on after its demise.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is a car that has not changed, a car that has remained the same throughout the years. As such, it is part of our emotional and automotive landscape,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eProduction in Germany was halted in 1979 because the van no longer met European safety requirements.\u003cbr/\u003eA VW plant in Mexico stopped producing the classic version of the van in 1995, leaving a factory on Sao Paulo's outskirts as its last lifeline. \u003cbr/\u003eVW has produced more than 10 million Volkswagen Transporter vans globally since the model was introduced 63 years ago in Germany.\u003cbr/\u003e13 September, 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
