Push in BMW's new diesel X5\u003cbr/\u003eDespite tough economic times, the New York Auto Show opened in New York on Wednesday, with manufacturers unveiling their latest and greatest innovations. \u003cbr/\u003eChrysler showcased a new SUV at the show, but a smaller vehicle grabbed a lot of attention: the Fiat 500 that brought Chrysler President Jim Press to the stage.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Wouldn't that make a great new company car?\", Press said as he stepped out of his subcompact ride. \u003cbr/\u003eChrysler LLC needs those cars to become popular quickly if the Michigan automaker expects to survive much longer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Obama administration issued a scathing rejection of the company's survival plan on March 30 and gave it 30 days to secure a merger with another automaker, most likely Italy's Fiat SpA. \u003cbr/\u003eWithout a deal, the government said Chrysler won't be able to meet an expected increase in demand for small cars, and it won't get any more federal aid, leaving it likely to be liquidated in bankruptcy court.\u003cbr/\u003eThe White House also scolded Chrysler for having a product lineup heavily weighted with trucks and SUVs, yet the only new product the company is unveiling at the New York show is a redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee.\u003cbr/\u003eChrysler insists the SUV, which clocks in at 20 miles per gallon (mpg)  (11.8 litres per 100 kilometres), in its two-wheel-drive version and 19 mpg (12.4 litres per 100  kilometres) in four-wheel-drive, is a crowd favourite and a crucial part of its lineup.\u003cbr/\u003eThe automaker expects its tentative partnership with Fiat to plug the holes in its small-car offerings.\u003cbr/\u003eIt hopes fuel-efficient Fiat cars, like the two-seater 500, will sell on this side of the Atlantic.\u003cbr/\u003eGeneral Motors has been given 60 days by the Obama administration to strike a deal with the UAW (United Auto Workers union) and bond holders, or risk bankruptcy. \u003cbr/\u003eBut GM did have a presence at the auto show, debuting their new GMC Terrain, a sport utility vehicle which will get an estimated 30 miles per gallon (7.8 litres per 100 kilometres) on the highway.\u003cbr/\u003eEd Welburn, Vice President GM global design, said GM's presence was more \"toned down\" this year than in the past. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd amid much fanfare, Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday unveiled four new vehicles at the Auto Show, including a high-performance version of its E-Class sedan and two hybrid models.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new generation E63 AMG features a 6.3-litre V8 engine that produces 518 horsepower, along with a seven-speed multi-clutch technology transmission.\u003cbr/\u003eThe German automaker's pair of hybrids included its E300 BlueTEC concept, which combines hybrid technology with a fuel-efficient diesel engine, and the ML450 Hybrid, a full-sized sport utility vehicle with a V6 engine and an 87-horsepower electric engine.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition, the company debuted its restyled GL350 BlueTEC diesel SUV, which features a new grill and lights, along with 20 percent to 30 percent better fuel economy.\u003cbr/\u003eLuxury car maker BMW unveiled their new X6M, a sport activity vehicle, along with new Diesel models.  \u003cbr/\u003eBMW, which also includes the MINI brand and Rolls Royce, has had declining sales, but Jim O'Donnell, President of BMW of North America, said his company is faring better than most. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We have got better balance sheets, stronger balance sheets and we haven't taken the same decisions that they have in the past which were all short term.
