Now the course is now open to frequent fliers willing to pay $265 USD, although most participants are still sent by their companies. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are now up to three classes a week. \u003cbr/\u003eHere at British Airways' flight training facilities near London's Heathrow Airport, most of the course takes place onboard this Boeing 737 cabin simulator.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's what you should do if anything goes wrong,\" explains British Airways safety instructor, Andy Clubb.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Thankfully staggeringly safe, nothing ever goes wrong but by knowing would could go wrong and more importantly knowing what to do about it, it just gives people a little bit more of a feeling that they're in control.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOnboard this simulated flight, course participants are treated to a regular safety demonstration by a flight attendant.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a procedure too many people ignore, according to Clubb.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The problem is in this day and age, everybody is so comfortable with flying they get on and don't consider safety,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And all we want them to do is to tune in for two minutes to that safety demonstration and just use that moment in time to think about what they are going to do if something was to happen.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut soon - and somewhat predictably - trouble hits the simulated flight.\u003cbr/\u003eSmoke begins to fill the cabin, flight attendants shout and course participants are rushed to the exits, just as they would do in a real-life emergency evacuation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Passengers always feel as if they're left out of the loop somewhere along the line,\" says Clubb.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So we put them through an emergency evacuation given them the opportunity to think about it, give them the opportunity to ask questions, we give them the answers and they suddenly realise that, yeah in any given situation where it's an evacuation, whether it's a decompression, there are actually positive things that they can do to put control back into their hands.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the course doesn't end there.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two dozen participants taking part are also learning the best way to brace for a crash, how to open aircraft doors and why to wait until exiting a plane to inflate their life vests.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We start with an emergency and evacuation exercise - it makes people think about it - and what they learn from that is to really tune into the safety demonstration, use that as an aide-memoire to formulate a plan,\" explains Clubb.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The most important thing we then go onto is the brace position - that's vitally important - and then they learn how to get themselves out of an aircraft by opening the doors in the over-wing exits.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Clubb, the key to survival is getting into the proper brace position.\u003cbr/\u003eParticipants are reminded to not interlock their fingers and to cover their stronger hand with their weaker one.\u003cbr/\u003eThe goal is to ensure that the bones in the stronger hand aren't broken so they can eventually unbuckle their seatbelt. \u003cbr/\u003eBut will participants of this course ever use the training?\u003cbr/\u003eEvery day, 8.3 million people around the globe step aboard some 93,500 flights, they almost always land safely. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the past decade, there have only been 138 crashes worldwide that had fatalities, according to aviation consultancy Ascend. \u003cbr/\u003eCourse participant, Sarah Pearson, says it's changed her outlook.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I was one of those people I think that when I first got on the plane they were doing the safety demonstrations, I didn't really take a lot of notice,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Because I've done it quite a few times and I didn't really take it in and now after doing this course it's made me completely look at it in a different way and realise I've got an appreciation for the safety and what the cabin crew do.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBritish Airways hopes the 15,000 people who've taken the training since 2004 can act as leaders for others to follow in a crash. \u003cbr/\u003eSome passengers freeze or melt down in an emergency. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's thought if they see someone quickly, calmly and confidently following a flight attendant's instructions to evacuate, they may do the same. \u003cbr/\u003ePearson says she's confident that she'll use some of the information she's learnt on forthcoming flights.\u003cbr/\u003eParticipants are taught that all passengers should think about an emergency during safety demonstrations, using that time to look for the nearest exit, plus an alternative one. \u003cbr/\u003eThey're also taught to check where their life vest is and practice unbuckling their seatbelt to build up muscle memory. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think next time I go on a plane I would definitely be checking where my life jacket is, I would be doing the muscle memory with the seatbelt, I'd have a plan -
