They are the brainchild of the prominent African-American magazine \" Essence\" The event was created to bring national attention to the African-American community for building impressive careers.  It honors members stars for excellence in the arts and entertainment  - from authors to singers, producers and legends.  WWF star and actor \"The Rock\" says he tries to give to the community by making responsible movies and had the pleasure of giving the Reader choice \"Entertainers of the Year\" award to Janet Jackson.\u003cbr/\u003eThe superstar, who has inspired many African-American female singers, looked stunning in a white gown but declined to talk to the press.   Producing legend Jimmy Jamm has worked with Janet Jackson for 18 years and says she's still on top of her game Author Terry McMillan was next to be honored. She received her award from Angela Bassett for her written work. Hollywood history maker Halle Berry was the star of the show and says she's still recovering from her Oscar win.  \u003cbr/\u003eShe received her award for  \"bringing beauty, talent and excellence to the forefront both on the big screen and off.\" Five time Grammy winner and singing sensation Alicia Keys sneaked in the back entrance but became emotional during the show.
