After nearly 10 years of silence, Ryu...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe whistleblower who exposed fake stem cell research in South Korea says the country is still dominated by the values that allowed cloning fraudster Hwang Woo-suk to become a national hero.  \u003cbr/\u003eAfter nearly 10 years of silence, Ryu Young-joon says the price of telling the truth still weighs on him, but he doesn't regret outing Hwang as a false prophet.\u003cbr/\u003eWorking in the lab at Kangwon National University, Ryu Young-joon is now a pathology professor with a PhD in bioethics. \u003cbr/\u003eBut his life was turned upside down in 2005 when he was a junior researcher for disgraced stem cell scientist, Hwang Woo-suk.  \u003cbr/\u003eRyu told a journalist that the then feted scientist's groundbreaking work on human embryonic stem cells was faked. \u003cbr/\u003eDenounced by Hwang supporters as a traitor, Ryu was forced to resign and lived like a fugitive for months.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Though Hwang committed wrongdoing, some people still support him. What Hwang has done is a reflection of ourselves, and we cannot deny ourselves. People's mentalities are like this. When I decided to report Hwang's stem cell scandal, I thought I have to withstand all the criticism from the public until they realise what was really going on. From my perspective, I felt that the public was reacting like that because they do not know was going on. However, I felt like I was mistreated,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005, Hwang claimed a significant advance in the cloning of human embryonic stem cells. \u003cbr/\u003eThe capacity to create healthy new cells raised many possibilities such as reversing spinal cord injuries and curing Alzheimers.\u003cbr/\u003eHwang was hailed as a national hero, until he was exposed as a fake.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2006, he addressed the media and apologised for his actions: \"I - as the report author - take the full responsibility for using fake data related to the stem cell thesis. I acknowledge all of that and apologise once again.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA court found Hwang guilty of embezzling government funds and violating bioethical laws. He was given a two year suspended prison sentence and his licence to conduct human cloning experiments was revoked.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there was a huge public backlash, with many people still supporting Hwang.\u003cbr/\u003eHan Hak-soo was the journalist at who finally exposed the fraud, based on a tip-off from Ryu. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's concerned that little has changed to prevent a similar situation happening again. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I do not think it is fundamentally improved. Speaking of structural issues, the silent cartel that the economical, political and academic powers possess, and the alliance for a certain profit for each other, are the big problems that have not been addressed in Korean society,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe broadcaster MBC eventually aired two programs that questioned the research authenticity, as well as unethical methods used to recruit egg donors.\u003cbr/\u003eHan says, \"We were very lonely because the majority of people were opposed to us (for revealing Hwang's scandal); and, it was a very serious situation in that people were saying they do not want to see the program (that revealed Hwang's stem cell scandal), they do not care about the truth and insisted the program should be cancelled for the benefit of the nation. For most people - rather than feeling that we were working for them - we felt as though we were alienated from people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eRyu tipped off the MBC PD NOTEBOOK journalist because Hwang was planning to carry out an invasive stem cell treatment on a paralysed 10 year old boy.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"MBC PD NOTEBOOK, us and the citizen group's strong motive for uniting and fighting this powerful lobby was that boy. Stopping that boy's clinical test was what each and every member wanted and everyone was happy that they were able to stop the test,\" says Han. \u003cbr/\u003eHwang had promised the boy would walk again if subjected to the same treatment that he claimed had worked on a dog. \u003cbr/\u003eRyu eventually outed Hwang in 2005 because he believed the experimental procedure could kill the boy.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter nearly 10 years of silence, Ryu says the price of telling the truth still weighs on him, but he doesn't regret it. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also wants to make sure a similar situation never happens again: \"All the facts that started the Hwang Woo-suk scandal still exist. To this day, many researchers are still tempted by those facts, and I think, if somebody gets tempted, it (another scandal) could happen right now.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe says it was not easy surviving as the whistle-blower who exposed the biggest fraud in the country's scientific history.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly last year he learned what happened to the boy Hwang had promised to cure. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The father of the boy said \"our boy has gone to heaven.\" Han Hak-soo producer was shocked, so he could no longer ask why or how that happened. He was just notified that the boy was dead.
