This leaves little space for scene settings and the director is forced to go straight to the point.\u003cbr/\u003eThe idea for the show came when one company, Beijing based Le-TV Media Group, realised the potential in China's booming mobile phone market.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a population of users that the government says should surpass 400 (m) million this year, companies are rushing to cash in with services ranging from news and sports reports to horoscopes.\u003cbr/\u003eOne firm announced plans in July for a novel to be transmitted to phones in 70-word chapters.\u003cbr/\u003eBut television by mobile phone is still in its infancy in China. The first services were offered in 2004. Third generation, or 3G, phones aren't expected in China until later this year with a likely prohibitive price tag.\u003cbr/\u003eThe few programs sent to phones have been versions of regular television broadcasts.\u003cbr/\u003eViewers who want to see \"Appointment\" will need a specially equipped South Korean-made phone from LG Electronics, who committed to the project with XBell Technology Group, the show's creator and owner of Le-TV.\u003cbr/\u003eXBell plans to show three other mini-serials this year, each covering other genres such as horror, suspense and action.\u003cbr/\u003eOther than its short duration, the show brings with it other challenges - particularly over the size of the screen.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Luo Ji's first television experience. For him, the \"Appointment\" brings new meaning to the term \"small screen.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe director's close ups mean that the actors are left to tell the story by using their expressions as much as their words.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's uncertain how mobile phone television will change people's daily lives. For some, like Yu Enyuan who came up with the idea for the show, it's not a matter of whether change will happen, but by how much.\u003cbr/\u003ePhones equipped for television sell in China for about 600 US dollars, several times the price of a standard phone, according to the Web site of the Communist Party newspaper People's Daily.\u003cbr/\u003eThe newspaper said, despite that, one market research firm says that by 2010 the country could have 120 (m) million subscribers receiving television programs by phone.
