No one was injured.\u003cbr/\u003eAPTV has obtained a copy of the video.\u003cbr/\u003eThis modified C-130 Hercules transport plane was viewed by the U-S government as one possible way of rescuing the 53 U-S hostages held in Tehran in 1980.\u003cbr/\u003eEmbarrassed by the failure of its first attempt to free the hostages -- Operation Eagle Claw in April 1980 -- the U-S government was desperate to ensure that any further rescue attempts were successful.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a result, the Hercules manufacturer Lockheed was commissioned to modify its widely-used, heavy load bearing transport plane. \u003cbr/\u003eThe programme -- Credible Sport -- was to cost an estimated U-S 30 (m) million dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eThis military video of the Hercules, obtained by the leading defence magazine Jane's Defence Weekly, shows the numerous modifications made to the plane.\u003cbr/\u003eMark 56 standard missile motors were used to give the plane take off thrust -- while four Shrike rocket missiles were added under the wings to help cushion the rapid sink rate.\u003cbr/\u003eASROCs (anti-submarine rockets) were mounted on the back for stability -- and four pairs were mounted around the cockpit to provide a decelerating force of 356kN.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plane was designed to land in Tehran in a space that was slightly smaller than a football pitch with a 10 metre high obstacle at either end.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well, the tape shows a most remarkable aircraft. Effectively this is a C-130 Hercules that can land and take off from a football stadium if need be, pretty much like a Harrier does, vertically essentially, or near vertically. And as such it's evidence of a remarkable and hitherto buried aerospace programme.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nick Cook, Jane's Defence Weekly\u003cbr/\u003eLockheed modified the plane's onboard navigation system, providing it with an \u003cbr/\u003einternally-generated guidance display to allow the plane to be landed at night.\u003cbr/\u003eCook believes the modifications -- done in 2 months -- were a sign of how desperate the Pentagon was to end the crisis.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think what it shows is the desperate measures the Pentagon and the administration were forced to look at the time of the US hostage crisis which at the time virtually paralysed the United States both militarily and politically.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nick Cook, Jane's Defence Weekly\u003cbr/\u003eHe also believes that had the U-S been forced to, it would have made use of the new Hercules.\u003cbr/\u003eThese pictures show the protection installed for the crew as the plane braked in such a short space.\u003cbr/\u003eThe modified plane was tested at Florida's Eglan Air Base, according to Jane's Defence Weekly.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring one operational test on 29 October 1980, the plane took off successfully but as the plane prepared to land its ASROC rockets fired prematurely.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aircraft was still 20 feet off the ground and ploughed into the runway, ripping off its right wing.\u003cbr/\u003eNo one was hurt in the accident. \u003cbr/\u003eThe plane -- though tests continued -- was not used in the hostage crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eLondon, UK. 3 March 1997 and military video\u003cbr/\u003e1.
