Close label in a shirt reading \"Made in Soweto\"\u003cbr/\u003eSouth Africa's Soweto township was the epicentre of black struggle against the Apartheid regime, home to both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, and has had a history of riots and violence.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now, as designers and entrepreneurs are hoping the inaugural Soweto Fashion Week will put the township's fashion sense under the spotlight.\u003cbr/\u003eBeyond the tourist T-shirts and ethnic costumes sold on Soweto's Vilakazi Street, a small group of fashionistas are gathering in a Johannesburg suburb for a dress rehearsal ahead of Thursday's ( 24 May) launch.\u003cbr/\u003eStephen Manzini, the 23-year-old entrepreneur behind Soweto Fashion Week, grew up in inner city Johannesburg around fashion. He had a grandmother who was a tailor and high school friends who were models and designers. He went into the recycling business, but maintained a passion for fashion. \u003cbr/\u003eNow the time has come for Manzini to express his fashion sense and Soweto, on Johannesburg's southwestern edge, is the natural place to do so.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We realised that Soweto needed this more than any other part of the county. There's a huge gap, demographically, in Fashion Weeks' industry and we saw that the best way we could fill that gap was in Soweto,\" says Manzini.\u003cbr/\u003eManzini acknowledges Soweto Fashion Week is an ambitious title for a three-day affair featuring 16 designers. He holds rehearsals in the parking lot and garden of a modest apartment borrowed from a tailor friend, in a northern Johannesburg neighborhood.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Manzini is confident that in coming years, his project will grow to a full week and give many more struggling designers an opportunity. He hopes to start his own business distributing designs that will first take the catwalk at his fashion week.\u003cbr/\u003eSoweto has long been known for its quirky sense of style, with designers splashing their own bright colors and urban sensibilities on everything from the latest silhouettes on European runways to the dapper suits Nelson Mandela wore when he lived in the township in the 1940s.\u003cbr/\u003eThe designers in Manzini's shows this coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday are not household names. But for 29-year-old designer Tebogo Lehlabi, Soweto is all about \"liberation\" and \"freedom.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLehlabi has never before participated in a fashion week. She says she had not been confident enough in the past to seek such a showcase, but now hopes that boutique owners will see her designs in Soweto and seek her out.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We're an emerging identity, so more or less anything goes, anything and everything can be described as Soweto, can be described as South African because it's a young and fresh identity. And it's very much spearheaded by the people living there and I think it is about time that this country started to define itself on its own terms and we need to package ourselves as well and sell ourselves at our own price, determine our own worth,\" says Lehlabi.\u003cbr/\u003eOne obvious group of young designers who hope to benefit from an increased awareness in South African fashion are the students at Johannesburg's LISOF fashion academy.\u003cbr/\u003eAs future fashion designers and fashion marketing professionals, the LISOF students are enthused by Soweto Fashion Week.\u003cbr/\u003eKwanele Khonjelwayo, 24, is a fashion marketer and a former student at LISOF. She sees the obvious benefit of the weekend's fashion shows.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In terms of the actual Soweto Fashion Week, that's really great, because there are so many people that are less township.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is hoped that Soweto Fashion Week will provide a launchpad for Soweto to be firmly placed on South Africa's fashion map. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd maybe the \"Made in Soweto\" tag
