Close tilt down of \"Melody of Summer\" painting ($8,500 USD)\u003cbr/\u003eA Hollywood artist is attracting attention with his series of surreal paintings which trick the viewer with unexpected juxtapositions and wild random images.\u003cbr/\u003eDirk Kortz says it's all about painting objects you normally wouldn't associate together.\u003cbr/\u003eA series of cartoon images, but what's the connection?\u003cbr/\u003eA cowboy, a fish, a cockerel and a Mexican wrestler... this unexpected juxtapositions of the images and their wild randomness is making the Los Angeles art community sit up.\u003cbr/\u003eThis painting, Persistence of Vision II, is one of a series of new works on display by New Mexico-born artist Dirk Kortz.\u003cbr/\u003eDirk Kortz's playful collection, \"New Works\", has been provoking debate - art experts say it evokes Freud's theory of how humour and dreams allow us to tap into our unconscious mind.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the artist himself doesn't necessarily subscribe to these scholarly interpretations.\u003cbr/\u003eHere at the Harris \u0026amp; Ruble Art gallery in Hollywood, the gallery owners are exhibiting Kortz work.\u003cbr/\u003eMarcella Ruble and Alan Harris use their historical art deco building to also house their legal practice.\u003cbr/\u003eMarcella Ruble says \"I think a lot of galleries are much more under financial pressure to have a lot of shows and to sell a lot of art, where as I feel I'm very blessed in the situation that this not only houses my gallery but it also houses our law firm.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHusband Alan Harris, lawyer and co-owner says they do not choose works on what will sell and says art galleries cannot just be about money today.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We do it based on a personal taste rather than purely guessing what might be the most successful commercially because I think if you are directed at too much at what is going to work commercially you will fail inevitably,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eSo the owners rate Kortz's works - but where do they fit in to the modern art movement?\u003cbr/\u003eMany have been tempted to class Kortz as another surrealist, but the artist prefers the term \"pastiche\".\u003cbr/\u003eKortz began his art with large scale collages and then turned his talent to painting.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has also produced short films and poetry.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, 20 years ago Kortz decided to focus exclusively on painting.\u003cbr/\u003eDeborah Trainer, a painter from Los Angeles, examines and enjoys Kortz's work.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"The way he divides the canvas into these almost comic book scenes and very fantastical so you feel like you're looking at a children's book and I think the work is very well executed.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKortz says there is no rhyme or reason to his painting choices, he has no method and instead lets his creativity flow without channelling it.\u003cbr/\u003eHe explains: \"This was a process for me, a process I wanted to see if I could do, was paint a number of images that you couldn't associate, that your mind just couldn't put them together.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKortz uses thousands of cut out images and posts them on the wall. He examines the photo in his hand and lets his paintbrush brush dictate the course of the painting. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm not just trying to be weird. I'm looking for something that for me resonates in a way that says something that I can't say with words or I'd write it and it's very difficult for me to make a meaning out of it because I don't think that anybody else would necessarily put those images together but they very likely would share the resonance if it works for me.\"\u003cbr/\u003eScott Schafer, is the senior curator of paintings at The Getty museum in Los Angeles. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says of the 300 thousand people who visit The Getty every year - most want to see painting's old masters but he does admit modern work appeals to more and more people now.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"There is a group of people who would go to anything that is contemporary, the opening of an envelope, if you called it contemporary art they would be there. That number is about 50 to 75 thousand people (in LA for example) after that it's hard to get normal people, people who want to come to museums to see contemporary art.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKortz has discovered a hungry market for his paintings and they now sell for many thousands of dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eThis painting, called \"Quality Time\", is his most expensive painting, priced at $20,000 USD.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother painting \"Comfort Food\" sells for $10,000 USD and \"Melody of Summer\" is $8,500 USD.\u003cbr/\u003eKortz's work will be on display until May 1, 2011 at the Harris and
