Mid shot of turtle release and swimming out to sea
Marine conservationists have raised fresh concerns over the alarming number of turtle deaths along the Kenyan coast.
The Watamu Turtle Watch and the IFAW (International Federation for Animal Welfare) say that over the last two years, many dead turtles have been swept ashore on the Kenyan coastline.
Conservationists says that most of these deaths can be attributed to bad fishing methods and the liberalisation of the fishing industry in Kenya, which continues unmonitored.
According to a study by the Kenya Fisheries department in 2004/2005 there were at least 600 foreign fishing vessels, operating with or without licences, along the Kenyan coast at any one time.
These foreign vessels which are encroaching within the "exclusion zone" (shallow waters) un - checked are not only accelerating resource depletion through over fishing, but they pose a great threat to the marine environment and conservation.
In the world of marine conservation the sea turtle has become a flagship species, as its decline is an indicator of the state of health of our oceans.
Watamu is located within the Marine Park on Kenya's coastline, an area which is part of the United Nations Biosphere Reserves.
Several species of marine turtles nest on these beaches including the Red Listed Green turtles, Hawksbill and Olive Ridley's.
Despite government legislation protecting marine turtles they are still extensively exploited throughout Kenya for their eggs, meat and shells.
Habitats are being destroyed by a growing human population and hundreds of turtles drown annually in fishing nets.
Watamu Turtle Watch is a marine conservation organisation committed to the protection of sea turtles and their marine environment; through community based development, practical conservation, education, research and campaigning.
Watamu Turtle Watch's work receives funding from the International Federation for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund and the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (Kenya and the US).
Kahindi Changwa Galo, Project manager for Watamu Turtle Watch says he has witnessed over the years, the ever-increasing threats these already endangered turtles face in Kenyan waters.
Watamu is also a unique feeding ground for juvenile turtles. Green and Hawksbill turtles thrive in the mangrove creeks, but it is these mangrove areas that fishermen also depend on for their livelihoods.
Traditionally, turtles have held great value for the local fishing communities for nutritional, economic and cultural purposes. Turtle meat and eggs were eaten, shells were sold on the black market and turtle oil was used as medicine and for "protection against evil spirits".
For some fishermen on the Kenyan coast, turtle products are still highly valued and an active trade is still very evident. Fishermen catch between 8 - 15 turtles in their nets on a daily basis.
Danson Changowa, a local fisherman of Mida Creek explains what the local perspective used to be and the challenges that Watamu Turtle Watch (WTW) faces in attempting to educate and create local awareness to protect the sea turtle population.
Watamu Turtle Watch has been operating a tag and release scheme since 1998, which works in co-operation with local fishermen.
Any turtle caught in a net is released back into the sea after being brought ashore, weighed, measured and tagged to monitor its movements.
Fishermen are encouraged to release the turtles rather than slaughter them, through payment incentive schemes, whereby for every turtle caught, fishermen are rewarded compensation for damaged nets.
Each year the number of fishermen involved in the tag and release scheme increases along with the turtles released.
Between 1998 and 2006 a total if 2,600 turtles have been saved and released through the project.
Conservation of turtles is proving successful amongst these Watamu Fisherman.
Elias Khindi, a local Mida Creek fisherman says that conservation is very important.
Tagging turtles is common practice as far as sea turtle conservation management is concerned.
Tag and release schemes monitor turtles movements and migratory patterns, as well as the population size.
Such information enables conservationists to put effective management plans into action on a regional, national and global level.
Turtles tagged in Watamu, have been found as far north as Somalia and as far south as Tanzania and Madagascar.
Tagged turtles from South Africa have even been caught in Watamu nets.
Despite the measures to protect the resident turtles and the success of the Watamu turtle conservation.
Both Kenyan resident turtles and visiting turtles are increasingly under threat.
The harvesting of turtle eggs, the demands for meat and oil, habitat destruction of nesting and foraging grounds by human encroachment, pollution and beach erosion are all taking a heavy toll.
Another threat is posed by fishing trawlers and drift nets, which accidentally catch sea turtles and drown them in fishing gear.
Watamu Turtle Watch say that worldwide, an estimated 155,000 turtles die every year in trawlers' shrimp nets.
The type of fishing gear used nowadays is having a very destructive impact on the marine environment worldwide.
Measures to combat and regulate commercial and industrial fishing practices fall under the government jurisdiction - to create proper management systems for fisheries, which prevent over fishing and protect threatened species in the marine environment.
Steve Trott, Project co-ordinator for Watamu Turtle Watch is still optimistic that it is not to late to reverse a lot of the threats the sea turtles are facing, but he is also very aware of the urgent need to implement sustainable conservation and fishing practices before it is too late
Once these measure have been addressed then the future of the sea
