widespread practice of aborting female foetuses.\u003cbr/\u003eDubbed the \"Electronic Cradle Scheme,\" the government's plan is an attempt to slow the practice that has led to an alarming imbalance in the ratio between males and females in India.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the southern state of Kerala , a scheme is already in place in the Thiruvanathapuram and Malappuram districts, which aims to look after unwanted baby girls.\u003cbr/\u003eIt may have the distinction of being the country's most literate state, but Kerala is no different when it comes to discrimination against female children.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo years old Rekha was abandoned by her parents - just like thousands of other female children.\u003cbr/\u003eBut she is fortunate to have found a loving family.\u003cbr/\u003eRekha was adopted by Valsala and Rajakayyan, a couple who waited for 12 long years to have a baby.  \u003cbr/\u003eAfter prolonged but unsuccessful fertility treatment, the couple decided to approach the \"Electronic Cradle\" centre or 'Ammathottil' to adopt a child.\u003cbr/\u003eStarted by the Kerala State Child Welfare council, the Electronic Cradle scheme works on a simple premise - don't kill your unwanted baby, leave her in our cradle and we will give her a chance to live.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is done on an anonymous basis.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is a sensor-activated door at the centre which opens when it detects a person approaching.\u003cbr/\u003eThe doors open revealing a cradle in which a baby can be placed.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the background, an announcement on a speaker phone assures the person that if they want to leave the child, she will be safe.\u003cbr/\u003eShalini, the supervisor of the Electronic Cradle scheme, says the system allows the child to left without disclosing the identity of the person.     \u003cbr/\u003eThere are currently more than 40 babies at the two district centres in Kerala. \u003cbr/\u003eMost babies left inside the cradle are aged from newborn to six months old - and they are usually left during the night.\u003cbr/\u003eOf course, it is no coincidence that most babies at the Electronic Cradle centre are female.  \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials say this is due to the the social pressure on women to produce a male child.\u003cbr/\u003eIn most parts of India, people believe that after you have brought up a girl, she has to be married off and this involves spending a huge amount of money on the wedding.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cultural preference for boys is also rooted in the custom of a dowry for the bride, with families often going into debt to provide gifts for the groom's family.\u003cbr/\u003eGirls are generally the last to be educated or to get medical treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia's latest census data shows that the preference for boys has skewed the gender ratio in the population of more than 1.1 (b)billion people.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts say that sex-selective abortions are responsible for the number of girls per 1,000 boys slipping from 945 in 1991 to 927 in 2001 - despite prenatal sex-determination tests being outlawed in India.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Kerala, many of the babies who survive the tests end up in the Electronic Cradle.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd many among those eventually find a home with their adoptive parents.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Cradle is not only saving precious lives - it has also opened a path for those who are unable to have their own children and who wish to nurture the girls with love and care.\u003cbr/\u003eShivrajan and Sugandhi are waiting to take a child home from the Electronic Cradle centre.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a country growing at the rate of nearly 9 per cent every year, gender discrimination and female infanticide remain a
